What is a bed bridge and why would you possibly need one?

If you place two single mattresses next to each other to form a double bed, then there will always be a gap between the two mattresses.

This gap can be annoying, especially if you like to sleep close to and cuddle with your partner.

There are various ways in which you can close up this gap, and the best one to use is a bed bridge. We'll tell you all you need to know about bed bridges in the article below.

Why would you need a bed bridge?

The gap between two mattresses is created when you use two smaller mattresses, such as the 90 x 190 cm mattresses, to create a double bed. Sometimes, a larger mattress can also be delivered in two parts.

Two separate mattresses can be particularly advantageous for couples with different body types and body weights. Each partner can then select the mattress that is right for them, meeting their desired requirements, level of firmness, and sleeping comfort.

Using two separate mattresses is also great if you prefer sleeping on innerspring mattresses. These mattresses tend to resonate very strongly due to their springs. If you use two separate mattresses instead of one, then you won’t be disturbed by your partner’s movements during sleep.

What can you do about the gap between two mattresses?

There are various solutions to avoiding or fixing the gap between two mattresses, while still creating the feel of a ‘real’ double bed. The cheapest way is always a bed bridge.

Bed bridge

The bed bridge (sometimes also called mattress wedge or mattress bridge) serves as a bridge between two mattress halves. The two mattresses are brought together to form a double bed and eliminate the possibility of falling into the gap between.

Where can you buy cheap bed bridges?

Most bed bridges are available at an average of £30, and you can easily order them online.

Amazon has a very large selection of bed bridges in all price ranges.

Are there alternatives to the bed bridge?

It isn't always necessary to buy a bed bridge. You can use mattress toppers or additional covers instead, and you can even make a bed bridge yourself.

Mattress topper

One alternative to the bed bridge is the mattress topper. This ensures that you have a uniform surface despite using two different mattresses.

You can easily buy a mattress topper in a variety of sizes. A mattress topper can improve the comfort of the mattress as well. Most mattresses are softened by the addition of a topper. You can also use a topper to create a warmer sleeping climate.

One disadvantage of a mattress topper is that it doesn’t allow for optimal individualisation if you and your partner’s body weights are very different. To do this, you would need to buy two different toppers, which defeats the purpose of joining two mattresses.

A good mattress topper will set you back at least £100, so a bed bridge is definitely much more affordable.

Additional cover

A cheaper alternative to the bed bridge and the mattress topper is simply adding on an additional cover.

Some manufactures offer an additional cover that is strong enough to press the two mattresses firmly together. This is intended to eliminate the gap between the two mattresses.

Make a bed bridge yourself

If you prefer to use your handicraft skills, you can also make a bed bridge yourself. There are only a few steps to follow.

First of all, you should know the measurements of your mattress. The best way to ascertain this is to measure the length of the mattress and the width of the gap. It is also very important to consider the height.

Once you have your measurements, you can visit the hardware store to find some filling material, such as foam. We recommend buying the filling material as a whole and cutting it up yourself using appropriate tools.

Now you can insert your very own bed bridge into the gap between the mattresses. Add a sheet to cover the filling. And now you’ll have your very own handmade bed bridge.

Larger mattresses

Of course, you can also buy a larger mattress in sizes 150 x 200 cm, 180 x 200 cm, or 200 x 200 cm instead of choosing two smaller mattresses and a bed bridge. This way, you can avoid the whole problem altogether.

That said, this isn’t always feasible, especially if you and your partner need very different mattresses to give you a good night’s sleep. And this isn’t feasible if you’re opting for innerspring mattresses, which usually have a high level of resonance.

If you’re looking for the best mattresses, then we’d suggest taking a look at our mattress reviews. There, you’ll find many great mattresses that you and your partner can share.
