Why choose an emperor mattress?

emperor mattress size

We'll say straight-up that emperor beds are definitely not for everyone.

They're very expensive and very large, making them a tad inconvenient for most UK households.

But, if you do have the finances and the space available, an emperor bed could be a fantastic investment.

Let's take a look at some of the key reasons an emperor mattress may be the best choice for you.

Premium choice for families

Currently, the 200 x 200 cm mattress is the largest mattress size commercially available in the UK.

If you're sharing your bed with a partner and want to have the best sleeping experience with enough space to move comfortably, an emperor bed is the answer.

This is even more true if you have pets or children that frequently climb into bed with you.

Emperor mattresses are large enough to accommodate the whole family comfortably.

Can singles also sleep on an emperor mattress?

Of course they can!

If you can afford it and have the space available, why not spoil yourself?

Convenient option for larger builds

People of larger build, especially if they're sharing their bed with a plus-size partner, will likely need a bigger bed.

Emperor beds are great for plus-size individuals.

An emperor mattress guarantees that both partners will still have enough room to sleep comfortably.

Ultimate luxury

Choosing an emperor mattress often reflects a desire for luxury and indulgence in one's bedroom setup.

Its grand size can transform any bedroom into a more elegant and opulent space, elevating the overall feel and aesthetic of the room.

Criteria to consider before purchasing an emperor mattress

Choosing a new mattress is never easy, and every purchasing decision should include asking yourself the following:

What material is the mattress made from?

There is a multitude of mattress materials available, but some of the most common ones include:

There is no right or wrong when it comes to mattress materials, but these materials do have different properties that ought to be taken into consideration.

When choosing an emperor bed, we'd recommend opting for a pocket sprung or hybrid mattress, but we'd urge you to click over to our articles detailing these materials in more depth.

Is the mattress of high density?

While choosing high-quality materials is important, you also need to pay attention to the density of the mattress.

This would refer to either the density of the foams used or the number of springs used in the mattress.

The higher the density or spring count, the higher the quality of the mattress and the more durable it will be.

Does the mattress offer good levels of firmness, stability, and support?

Firmness and stability are not necessarily the same.

A firmer mattress can offer more stability and may, for example, be better suited to heavier-weight sleepers, but a high-quality, softer mattress can also offer sufficient stability and support.

Support is a non-negotiable.

Any mattress you choose must offer you sufficient stability and support to keep your spine in a healthy alignment.

This prevents back, neck, and shoulder pains and ensures you get the most comfortable night's sleep.

Firmness, however, is largely a matter of preference.

While factors such as build, age, body weight, and preferred sleeping positions do play a part, you ultimately need to choose a firmness level that you're comfortable with.

This can be difficult to navigate, which is why we've developed the Sleep Hero firmness scale to guide you.

What are the delivery conditions associated with the purchase?

We'd recommend that any brand you purchase from fulfils the following delivery criteria:

  • Free delivery within the UK
  • Room-of-choice or two-man delivery is preferable
  • A risk-free trial period of a minimum of 100 nights
  • Free returns with pick-up organised by the brand

There are some smaller negotiables here.

For example, you may choose a brand that doesn't offer room-of-choice delivery because you have family or friends who can help you carry the mattress.

Or, you may choose to go for a brand that charges a small fee for the returns but still organises the actual pick-up.

Either way, the delivery conditions of the brand you end up choosing should make the process as easy as possible and allow you the freedom to trial the mattress and return it if you're not satisfied.

Don't forget that it may take 3 - 4 weeks to get used to the feel of a new mattress, particularly if the materials of your new mattress are very different to what you slept on previously.

But even if you've asked yourself all the above questions, some criteria remain important when you want to buy an emperor bed.

You'll need to ask yourself the following:

Is my room large enough to accommodate an emperor mattress?

Before investing in an emperor mattress, ensure your bedroom can comfortably accommodate its large size.

You'll need enough space around the bed to move freely and include other furniture pieces without the room feeling cramped.

lady sleeping on the floor
If you're in a small apartment, an emperor bed won't be a feasible option.

Don't forget that the mattress may measure 200 x 200 cm, but unless you're getting a divan base that sits flush with the mattress, you'll also need to add extra cm on either side to allow space for the bedframe.

Do I have the budget available?

Emperor mattresses can vary significantly in price based on materials and brand.

Define your budget early in the shopping process to guide your choices and ensure you find a mattress that offers good value for money without breaking the bank.

You may need to settle on a super king mattress if your budget can't be stretched further.

What do emperor mattresses cost?

Larger-size mattresses are always more expensive than smaller mattresses, so you'll be fleshing out your max budget on an emperor bed. 💷

Realistically, you'll be looking at spending around £1000+ on an emperor bed.

But this doesn't mean you can't snag a great deal.

  • Shop during sales: Major sales events like Black Friday or Boxing Day can lead to substantial savings.
  • Consider online retailers: Online-only shops have fewer overhead costs and frequently offer free delivery and returns, allowing for better prices and adding extra value to your purchase.
  • Check for deals and offers: You'll find promotional offers for most major brands, and it's worth waiting for a good discount to hit before making your purchase.

If there are any promotions running on our selected emperor mattresses, we'll mention them throughout this page.

Where can I buy an emperor mattress protector?

We always recommend purchasing a waterproof mattress protector to safeguard your mattress from stains, spills, dirt, dust mites, and bacteria.

Luckily, Panda London has an emperor mattress protector available. 👇

Where to find emperor bed frames

Emperor beds are as rare as emperor mattresses, but they're not impossible to find.

It is likely, though, that you'll need to step away from modern bed-in-a-box brands to consider more specialist bed retailers for emperor beds.

Even Otty, who sells one of our favourite emperor mattresses, doesn't sell emperor bed frames.

Here are some specialised bed retailers that sell emperor bed frames:

Don't forget to take proper measurements to ensure the bed frame will fit into your home comfortably. 📐

Is an emperor bed worth it?

If you have the space and the budget available, then we'd say absolutely!

Emperor beds offer the utmost in comfort, space, and luxury, so if it's within your means to get one, you won't be disappointed.

But emperor beds are by no means a necessity, and you should definitely shop within your budget.
