How comfortable is the Emma sofa bed?
The Emma mattress sofa bed is comfortable as both a sofa and a bed. 🎉
But in true Sleep Hero fashion, we tested the product for our Emma Sleep sofa bed review so we can share how the product performs for either function.
How comfortable is the Emma convertible sofa as a sofa?
The Emma Sleep sofa bed is carefully designed for optimal comfort, using high-quality materials for both the structure and the mattress.
A few things are notable when looking at this product as a sofa:
- The backrest of the sofa comprises three large cushions. These are lightweight, polyester-filled cushions that maintain their shape even after extended use.
- The seat cushions double as part of the mattress if you turn the sofa bed into two singles or a trundle.
- The armrests are well-padded, making it easy to find your perfect cosy spot on the sofa.
- The sofa is quite large, even for a three-seater, and two smaller rectangular cushions are included for a decorative touch.
All the cushions have removable and machine-washable covers, making them very convenient to clean.
During our testing, we found the Emma sofa really comfortable to sit on - it's both spacious and supportive.
How comfortable is the Emma sleeper couch as a bed?
The bed function of a sofa bed is always a little more complex, as we need to consider mattress firmness and support, overall breathability, and the support of the sofa bed frame.
Let's first consider the actual frame and storage:
- When unfolded, the sofa bed reveals a base with fourteen flexible birch slats, which creates a flat and solid surface for the mattress that prevents sagging and provides excellent breathability.
- While the seat cushions make up part of the mattress, the actual fold-out mattress is stored underneath the sofa with the extendable birch slats.
It's very easy to convert the Emma sleeper from sofa to bed, and we demonstrate the sofa-to-bed conversion process further down. 🔧
Now, let's look at the actual Emma sofa bed mattress to determine how comfortable this bed is.
The Emma sofa bed mattress
The Emma sofa bed mattress is made of high-density polyurethane foam with an open-cell structure that allows air, moisture, and body heat to flow easily from one side to the other.
Overall, the mattress sleeps quite cool, and it will be well-suited to all types of sleepers, including those who sleep a bit hotter.
Conveniently, the Emma sofa bed mattress is also much thicker than standard sofa bed mattresses - it measures 18 cm (7 inches) thick.
Thicker mattresses are often much more comfortable and suited to longer-term use if you need to use your sofa bed as your daily bed for permanent sleeping.
This extra thickness also caters for the unique double-sided feature of the Emma sofa bed mattress.
Unlike standard sofa mattresses, the Emma sofa bed mattress has two sides that offer two different firmness levels.
- The softer green side will be well-suited to side sleepers or lighter-weight sleepers.
- The firmer blue side will be well-suited to stomach sleepers and back sleepers, couples, or heavier-weight sleepers.
This customisable feature of the Emma mattress sofa bed is quite unique, and makes this an excellent product for giving your guests the best sleeping experience possible.
In which sizes is the Emma sofa bed available?
The Emma convertible sofa is only available as a three-seater sofa, in contrast to the Bruno sofa bed, which is available as a single chair bed, a two-seater, and a three-seater.
Here are some of the sofa bed dimensions:
- The complete sofa bed dimensions are 90 x 222 x 92 cm (35 x 87 x 36 inches).
- The seat height and seat depth measure 55 x 92 cm (22 x 36 inches).
But despite its limitations in terms of sofa size, the Emma sofa bed has multiple bed sizes available.
Let's look at these in more detail.
Converting your sofa into two single beds or a trundle
You can easily convert your sofa bed into two single beds or a trundle, using the seat cushions as one bed and the fold-out mattress as the other one.
Each single bed has a total sleeping surface of 80 x 200 cm (31 x 79 inches), perfect for a single guest. 🙍
Annoyingly, though, these dimensions do not match UK or EU single mattress sizes, making it difficult to find suitable bedding or mattress toppers.
For UK buyers, we recommend opting for an EU-sized sheet. It may still be too wide, but at least it'll be the right length.
You can find EU-sized bedding from select retailers like IKEA.
Alternatively, you may wish to opt for a flat sheet, which would give you a better overall fit.
Converting your sofa into one queen-sized bed
If you don't want two singles or a trundle, you can attach the two flat slat systems together to make an EU-sized queen bed with a total sleeping surface of 160 x 200 cm (63 x 79 inches).
This is ideal if you're setting up a guest bed for a couple or a larger individual - or just someone who wants to sleep a tad more comfortably, as many adults would.
These dimensions perfectly match the EU queen size but don't match any UK mattress or bedding sizes.
As with the singles, we'd recommend purchasing an EU-sized sheet or flat sheet for the best fit.
If you're looking to add a topper, we can recommend the Panda mattress topper, which conveniently comes in both UK and EU mattress sizes.

Emma sofa bed price and discounts
The Emma sofa bed comes at a higher price point, but it's also made from premium materials and features an easy-to-use mechanism.
These alone would warrant the higher price, but it's also worth keeping in mind that Emma only offers a 2-year guarantee, while other brands, like Bruno, offer a 10-year guarantee on sofa beds.
We generally prefer products with a longer guarantee as this gives some indication of how long the brand expects its products to last.
Emma sofa bed sale
