How we test products
Our mission is to take the guesswork out of finding the perfect sleep products.
We've dedicated hundreds of hours to testing mattresses and sleep accessories, and rely on a team of testers of differing weights, temperature preferences, and sleeping positions to evaluate each product.
Tested products are granted the Sleep Hero tested stamp of approval, a mark of our review's reliability.
If we haven't personally tested a product, please be assured that we invest significant time and energy into scouring the UK market and researching the best recommendations, and we work with a team of sleep experts who review our articles, ensuring that the insights we provide are not only relatable but also reliable.
Origin mattress composition
The Origin mattress is what you’d call a “hybrid mattress”.
It combines different comfort layers to provide you with a perfectly supported sleep.
The Origin mattress is designed with 6 unique layers. ✨
These layers include:
- HexaGrid layer
- Graphite-infused (cooling) foam
- Low-density foam
- Antigravity pocket springs
- Polyurethane
- 100% quilted bamboo Tencel fabric top cover
We’ll unpack the most important layers below.
HexaGrid layer
The HexaGrid layer is one of the unique components that make the Origin mattress stand out from other hybrid mattresses.
The HexaGrid orthopaedic layer is a foam layer with hexagon-shaped grooves designed to cradle your pressure points and offer relief to the joints.
It’s divided into 3 thirds with a firmer midsection for extra support for the back.
Graphite-infused foam layer
Graphite has recently become a popular material for foam mattresses.
This is because graphite can wick away moisture and absorb excess body heat.
The Origin mattress promises to keep the body close to 18.3°C with these additional cooling particles. 🌡️
Antigravity pocket springs
The pocket spring layer is designed with support in mind.
These separately-encased springs give individual support to each area of the body.
This helps to keep the spine elevated and minimises motion transfer across the mattress.
The spring layer also encourages maximum airflow as excess heat can escape between the springs. 🌬️
Bamboo Tencel cover
To top things off, these layers are wrapped in a high-quality 100% bamboo Tencel cover.
Bamboo is highly sustainable as well as naturally cool.
It’s also soft and gentle for sensitive skin. 🦔
The perimeter of the cover is made from a grey cotton blend fabric.
Overall, the cover feels and looks high quality. 🧵
The sides of the cover have handles, which makes moving the mattress around easier.
The only downside is that the cover is not removable or washable.
A removable and washable cover allows you to air the mattress and wash away any bacteria or dust build-up in the cover. 🦠
It’s not a train smash, but if you’re an allergy-sufferer or frequent night sweater, it’s perhaps worth considering a mattress with a washable cover instead.
These options might be more suitable:
Origin mattress comfort
The best way to test a mattress is - you guessed it - to sleep on it! 😴
This is fundamental to determine if the Origin mattress is suitable.
But suitability depends on your sleeping position, weight, and other key factors.
Sleeping positions are important because they can affect the spine's alignment and how much pressure you need on different areas of the body.
So, how did the Origin Hybrid mattress fare in our sleep test? 👇
Side sleeping
Most of the British public are side sleepers, and our sleep testers are no different.
Side sleepers require a medium-feel mattress that contours around pressure points while providing support for the spine.
You can see how the side sleeping position looked for our male and female tester:
Unfortunately, the mattress felt too firm for the side sleeping position.
You can see in the image how the shoulders aren't well aligned with one another, as the mattress is pushing back against the shoulder closest to the mattress.
We also felt minimal pressure relief in the joints. 😖
It should have been slightly softer around the hip and shoulder to absorb some of this pressure, and we did experience some discomfort.
Back sleepers
Back sleeping is considered the healthiest sleeping position by sleep experts. 👩⚕️
Most back sleepers require a medium-firm mattress that absorbs some of the weight of the backside whilst promoting a straight spine.
Again, you can observe how this looked:
We found the Origin mattress is fairly suitable for back sleepers.
The spine was optimally aligned, and the joints and heavier regions were absorbed somewhat by the HexaGrid layer.
However, it was slightly more suited to our heavier male sleep tester. ✔️
Our lighter female tester found that the Origin mattress was still slightly too firm for this position and would have preferred a softer feel for even better alignment and pressure relief.
Stomach sleepers
Stomach sleeping is less common, yet some people can only find comfort when lying on their stomachs.
Stomach sleepers require a firm mattress and soft pillow that encourages the spine and neck to be neutrally aligned. 🥰
The images below show you how our testers slept on their stomach:
We found the Origin mattress to be the most comfortable in the stomach sleeping position. 💕
The firm feel of the mattress was ideal for keeping the spine aligned with the neck when sleeping on our front.
You can also see in this image how sleeping without a pillow can be beneficial for stomach sleepers to help keep the neck low and aligned with the spine.
Origin mattress firmness
The Origin Hybrid mattress is described as having “soft and firm support”.
But we’d definitely rate it at the firmer end of the scale. 🧱
It’s one of the firmest mattresses we’ve tested yet (and there’s been quite a few).
We rated it an 8.5/10 on our Sleep Hero firmness scale, where 1 is the softest and 10 is the firmest.
This is significantly firmer than some other bed-in-a-box mattress brands, such as Simba (6/10), Emma (4/10) and Nectar (7/10).
If you’re looking for a firmer-feeling mattress that doesn’t snuggle the body as much as other foam brands, then the Origin mattress is for you.
Edge support
We also tested how well the Origin mattress absorbed weight at the very edge.
This can be a dealbreaker for those who like to sit on the edge of the bed in the morning. 🌅
Take a look at the images:
Overall, the Origin mattress had excellent edge support. 😅
When sitting on the edge of the bed, we didn’t feel the mattress sagging, and it could absorb our weight even when focused on one area.
Sinking depths
As well as the edge of the mattress, we wanted to see how much the mattress sank in the middle. ⚓
We tested this by standing in the middle of the mattress with our weight concentrated on one area.
The mattress sank to around 11 cm (4.3”).
This sinkage is fairly minimal compared to some mattresses we’ve performed this test with in the past. 🤔
Take a look at how these other mattresses performed:
- Simba Hybrid mattress: 13 cm (5.11”)
- DreamCloud Luxury Hybrid mattress: 13 cm (5.11”)
- Panda Hybrid mattress: 19.5 cm (7.6”)
This is another indication of the firmer support of the Origin Hybrid mattress.
Heavier-weight people will be more comfortable on this mattress as it can absorb more weight in a single area without plummeting to the base.
We also measured how much the mattress sank in the heavier parts of the body depending on your sleeping position:
Person A (56 kg / 124.4 lbs) | Person B (82 kg / 182 lbs) | |
Side sleeping | Shoulders: 1.5 cm (0.59”) Pelvis: 5 cm (1.9”) |
Shoulders: 3 cm (1.18”) Pelvis: 6 cm (2.36”) |
Back sleeping | Shoulders: 0 cm (0”) Pelvis: 3 (1.18”) |
Shoulders: 3 cm (1.18”) Pelvis: 3.5 cm (1.37”) |
Stomach sleeping | Shoulders: 0 cm (0”) Pelvis: 3 cm (1.18”) |
Shoulders: 1.5 (0.59”) Pelvis: 3 cm (1.18”) |
As you can see, there is very little sinkage overall.
For side sleepers, the ideal mattress would have much more sinking in the shoulder and pelvis to absorb this pressure suitably. ☁️
The back sleeping position had moderate sinking in the pelvis, but we’d have preferred more contouring around this region for even better support. 🤗
However, stomach sleepers need minimal sinking in these parts, and the results indicate the Origin mattress is more suitable for this sleeping position.
Is the Origin mattress good for couples?
Motion transfer determines whether a mattress is suitable for couples.
This refers to how much the mattress can absorb motion, preventing you from bouncing when there is movement on the other side.
We tested this by having one tester lay down on the mattress with their eyes closed while the other tester made as much movement as possible on the other side.
Our tester felt minimal movement even when the other tester was jumping up and down on the other side of the bed. 🦘
Our Sleep Hero kitty likes to jump on and off the bed at night, but we weren’t disturbed by his movements either.
Overall, we found that the Origin mattress has very good motion transfer. ⛵
If you’re a restless sleeper or you usually get disturbed by your partner moving around in bed at night, then the Origin mattress could be your answer to a more restful sleep.
On the Origin mattress, you shouldn’t feel your partner getting out of bed to use the bathroom, or tossing and turning during the night.
Does the Origin mattress sleep cool?
Many people are sceptical about buying memory foam mattresses because they are known for retaining heat, which creates a warmer sleeping environment. ♨️
However, hybrid mattresses are typically cooler than all-foam mattresses because they incorporate springs, which promote better airflow throughout the mattress.
This increased airflow helps to dissipate heat, which can build up in all-foam mattresses, and they often also incorporate additional cooling properties.
The Origin mattress is infused with graphite cooling particles, designed to keep your body at 18.3°C. ❄️
This is the recommended temperature for deep sleep.
Additionally, the Tencel pillowtop cover helps to wick away moisture and increase air circulation with over 10,000 ventilation holes.
We experienced a cool and breathable sleep on the Origin mattress.
However, if you’re an excessively hot sleeper, you may experience different results.
Luckily, you have a 200-night sleep trial to discover whether the Origin Hybrid mattress is cool enough for you.
Who is the Origin mattress suitable for?
The Origin mattress is unique from other bed-in-a-box mattresses, particularly since it feels much firmer than the typical “medium-firm” hybrid mattresses.
Therefore, we wouldn’t recommend this mattress to everyone. 👎
The Origin mattress is most suitable for:
- Stomach sleepers
- Heavier weight sleepers (within the recommended weight capacity)
- People looking for orthopaedic support
- Couples and restless sleepers
- Those looking for a more affordable mattress
- Warm sleepers
The Origin mattress is less suitable for:
- Side sleepers
- Lighter weight sleepers
- Those who want to feel “hugged in” by a mattress
- Excessively hot sleepers
- Elderly people or those with joint pain
The Origin mattress is particularly suitable for those looking for a firm bed-in-a-box mattress that is cheaper than other firm mattress options.
Origin mattress sizes
The Origin Hybrid mattress is available in standard UK sizes.
This includes:
- Origin mattress single: 90 x 190 cm (3' x 6'3")
- Origin mattress small double: 120 x 190 cm (4' x 6'3")
- Origin mattress double: 135 x 190 cm (4'6" x 6'3")
- Origin mattress king size: 150 x 200 cm (5’ x 6’6”)
- Origin mattress super king: 180 x 200 cm (6’ x 6’6”)
We also measured the depth of the Origin Hybrid. 📏
The Origin mattress is advertised as 25 cm (9.8”) in depth.
However, ours fell just 1 cm short of this at 24 cm (9.4”).
Measurements can vary with bed-in-a-box mattresses depending on how much it decompresses.
However, you’ll find most measure around the 25 cm (9.8”) mark.
Does the Origin mattress have a weight limit?
The Origin mattress has a recommended weight capacity depending on the size mattress you purchase.
Follow this guide:
- Single: Up to 100 kg / 220 lbs
- Double: Up to 200 kg / 440 lbs
- King: Up to 240 kg / 529 lbs
- Super King: Up to 240 kg / 529 lbs
Exceeding the recommended weight limit could damage the mattress and void your warranty. ❌
Consider the Nectar mattress if you need a mattress that supports weights over this recommended limit.
The Nectar mattress supports weights over 290 kg (938 lbs).

Origin mattress prices
One of the great advantages of the Origin mattress is that it’s much more affordable than competing bed-in-a-box brands. 💰
Prices for the Origin Hybrid mattress start at £699.
This is significantly cheaper than other hybrid mattresses such as the Nectar Hybrid, Simba Hybrid, and Emma Premium, which cost between £800 - £999 for a single size.
If you’re looking for a firm budget-friendly mattress that is still high-quality, then the Origin mattress is a no-brainer. 🧠
For a more premium firm mattress, consider the DreamCloud Luxury Hybrid instead.

Origin mattress delivery
The Origin mattress includes free delivery in the UK and should arrive between 2 - 8 business days. 🚚
Our Origin mattress arrived promptly, but unlike other brands, it was not packaged in a cardboard box.
Initially, this made us a little sceptical, as there was no branding on the outside to tell us anything about the mattress.
Our delivery driver was on his own and asked us to help him carry the mattress from the van and take it upstairs ourselves, which we were more than happy to do.
However, some less able people may have struggled in this scenario.
Other brands usually come with two delivery drivers and deliver the mattress to the room of your choice.
As we unwrapped the Origin mattress, we were surprised to see it was rolled in multiple layers of plastic. 🤨
We counted between 3 - 4 plastic layers, and unwrapping all these layers felt like pass-the-parcel.
Eventually, we could unroll the Origin mattress, which began to expand immediately.
It was finally time to cut away the final layer of plastic.
As soon as we did, the mattress expanded to its full size within seconds.
Overall, we were very impressed with how quickly the mattress expanded.
However, we also have some concerns about the multiple plastic layers and what impact this might have on the environment. 🌎
Origin mattress returns
Every Origin mattress includes a 200-day risk-free trial and free returns, which you automatically enrol in with your purchase.
From the day of delivery, you then have 200 days to sleep on your mattress and decide if it’s a good fit.
If you find the Origin mattress unsuitable, simply pop the Origin brand a message.
They’ll arrange to pick up your Origin mattress for free, and once it’s received back, you’ll get a full refund. 💰
We typically recommend giving a mattress at least a month before deciding whether it’s for you, as it can take our bodies around 3 - 4 weeks to adjust to a new mattress.
Your Origin mattress should also be returned in good condition.
We’d recommend purchasing a waterproof mattress protector to prevent accidental stains during the trial. ☔
How long will the Origin mattress last?
Your Origin mattress also automatically qualifies for a 15-year warranty. 🤞
This protects you from:
- Visible indentation (more than 2.54 cm/ 1 inch) caused by manufacturing faults
- Any physical or structural flaw that causes the foam to split/crack
However, the warranty will not cover you if the fault is caused by accidental damage.
Accidental damage includes using an unsuitable bed frame, washing the cover, stains, tears, burns or damage caused during a move.
We highly recommend using a mattress protector with your Origin mattress.
This not only protects your warranty from unexpected accidents but also improves the overall longevity of the mattress and decreases bacteria and dust build-up.
These are our favourites:
Should you buy the Origin mattress?
We think the Origin mattress is an excellent budget-friendly mattress for those looking for firmer support. ✔️
It’s a particularly good option for:
- Stomach sleepers
- Heavier weight sleepers
- Those looking for orthopaedic support
However, we don’t think this mattress is for everyone. ❌
It’s not very well suited to:
- Side sleepers
- Lighter weight sleepers
- Those looking for pressure relief on the joints
But, either way, you can feel assured by the 200-night trial so that you can try it out before you fully commit to this purchase.
