How we test products
Our mission is to take the guesswork out of finding the perfect sleep products.
We've dedicated hundreds of hours to testing mattresses and sleep accessories, and rely on a team of testers of differing weights, temperature preferences, and sleeping positions to evaluate each product.
Tested products are granted the Sleep Hero tested stamp of approval, a mark of our review's reliability.
If we haven't personally tested a product, please be assured that we invest significant time and energy into scouring the UK market and researching the best recommendations, and we work with a team of sleep experts who review our articles, ensuring that the insights we provide are not only relatable but also reliable.
Emma mattress protector composition
The Emma mattress protector is a thin, waterproof layer made from 100% polyester that will protect your mattress against stains, spills, dirt, moisture, and bacteria.
It also creates an additional layer to protect you from bed bugs and dust mites.
It is available in a white-and-grey design that perfectly matches the Emma mattress.
The Emma mattress protector has 3 notable design features:
- Cairfull material (100% polyester) for enhanced breathability.
- Applied Purotex technology to prevent allergies.
- EmmaGuard technology as a 100% waterproof layer.
This combination allows the mattress protector to be soft and comfortable, durable, breathable, waterproof, and allergy-resistant.
We expand upon these features below.
The Emma mattress protector is allergy-friendly
Emma UK advertises their mattress protector as featuring an AllergyShield technology that is clinically proven to protect you from dust mites and other allergens.
Dust mites are responsible for triggering 70% of all respiratory allergies.
According to the NHS, a dust mite allergy is the second most common allergy in the UK (the first is hay fever).
To combat allergies, Emma has introduced Purotex technology to its mattress protectors.
What is Purotex?
Purotex is a technology that relies on 100% natural probiotics to assist in significantly reducing allergies.
It works like this:
- A Purotex layer is applied to the mattress protector.
- This Purotex layer contains microcapsules, which are filled with natural probiotics.
- As you move on your bed, this creates friction, causing the microcapsules to burst open.
- Probiotics are emitted and start to multiply.
- These absorb moisture and start cleaning up allergens.
By absorbing all moisture, the probiotics prevent the growth of dust mites, mould, and bacteria.
According to Purotex, it can take up to 2 weeks for the probiotics to multiply and provide full, permanent anti-allergy protection.
Purotex-treated materials reduce house dust mites by up to 93.7%.
The introduction of this unique technology makes the Emma mattress protector hypoallergenic, antibacterial, and allergy-friendly.
This is ideal for people prone to allergies. 🤧
According to numerous Emma mattress protector reviews, it does indeed significantly reduce allergies and the symptoms thereof, much more than standard mattress protectors do.
While it may not alleviate all symptoms of allergies, you’re likely to notice a marked improvement.
Emma mattress protector washing instructions
The Emma mattress protector may form a watertight barrier to protect your mattress from spills and stains, but the protector itself is not stain-resistant.
This means, for example, that if you spill a mug of coffee, your mattress protector will get stained, but your mattress will be 100% protected.
You need to wash your mattress protector regularly. 🛀
We recommend washing it every two months as a standard, but immediately after you’ve spilt something.
How do I wash my Emma mattress protector?
Because the Emma mattress protector is stretchy, you can easily remove it from your mattress.
The Emma mattress protector is machine-washable at 40 degrees.
This is great as it not only ensures you can keep the protector clean but further safeguards against the build-up of bacteria and dust mites.
Can you tumble dry the Emma mattress protector?
You should not tumble-dry the Emma mattress protector.
Some guides suggest that you could tumble dry a waterproof mattress protector on a low heat setting and remove it immediately after the cycle has finished.
This prevents the waterproof layer (mostly made from polyurethane) from coming into contact with the hot drum, which could melt the membrane and destroy the efficacy of the mattress protector.
But we would not recommend experimenting as tumble-drying your Emma mattress protector can severely damage its unique features.
Instead, you should drip dry your Emma mattress protector.💧
Due to the waterproofing, it may take a little longer to dry than a sheet, for example, so choose a good, clear day, or hang it up in a warm room.
