How we test products
Our mission is to take the guesswork out of finding the perfect sleep products.
We've dedicated hundreds of hours to testing mattresses and sleep accessories, and rely on a team of testers of differing weights, temperature preferences, and sleeping positions to evaluate each product.
Tested products are granted the Sleep Hero tested stamp of approval, a mark of our review's reliability.
If we haven't personally tested a product, please be assured that we invest significant time and energy into scouring the UK market and researching the best recommendations, and we work with a team of sleep experts who review our articles, ensuring that the insights we provide are not only relatable but also reliable.
Brook + Wilde mattress composition
Brook + Wilde makes some of the best mattresses in the UK. 🇬🇧
There are four mattresses in the Brook + Wilde family:
- Brook + Wilde Lux mattress: This is their flagship mattress with five layers.
- Brook + Wilde Elite mattress: This is an 8-layer mattress with a removable & washable top cover.
- Brook + Wilde Ultima mattress: This is a 10-layer ultra-luxury mattress with temperature-cooling support.
- Brook + Wilde Perla mattress: This is a handmade, 14-layer mattress with over 7000 pocket springs, cashmere, bamboo, and wool, coming in at over £3,600 for the smallest size.
For this article, we're focusing exclusively on the brand's flagship model and offering a Brook and Wilde Lux mattress review. 🏆
The Brook and Wilde Lux mattress
The Brook + Wilde Lux mattress is a 26 cm (10.2 inches) hybrid mattress comprising five layers, including the top cover.
These five layers are:
- Breathable mattress cover
- Cooling memory foam
- Wave technology support foam
- 1000 full-size 13.5 cm (5.3 inches) pocket springs
- Support base layer
All foams used in the Lux mattress are Certi-PUR certified, meaning they’re free from toxins and harmful chemicals. 🧪
Let’s take a closer look at the hybrid composition of the Brook + Wilde Lux mattress.
Brook + Wilde mattress layers
We’ll look at the mattress cover in more detail further down.
For now, let’s look at the actual compositional elements.
1. Top layer of cooling memory foam - 5.5 cm (2.1 inches)
Memory foam is known for its orthopaedic qualities.
It moulds to your body for superior pressure relief, providing contouring support. 🤗
It also effectively eliminates motion transfer.
The cooling elements of this top layer aim to counteract the heat retention properties of memory foam.
2. Wave technology support foam - 3.5 cm (1.4 inches)
The unique Brook + Wilde wave foam is an extra-dense support foam. 🌊
It is thicker in some areas than in others to give you additional neck and shoulder support and aid optimal spinal alignment.
3. 1000 full-size pocket springs - 13.5 cm (5.3 inches)
The layer of full-size pocket springs makes up the mattress's core.
These springs measure 13.5 cm (5.3 inches) and provide bounce and push-back, adding that touch of pocket-sprung luxury. 🌀
The previous model of the Brook + Wilde Lux mattress featured an additional layer of 2000 mini pocket springs.
These have been removed in the updated version for a more simplistic - but equally supportive - design.
4. Base layer - 4.8 cm (0.9 inches)
High-quality mattresses have high-density base layers that offer structural support.
The support foam in the Brook + Wilde Lux gives the mattress a firm foundation to ensure you're well-supported night after night for years to come.
Brook + Wilde mattress firmness
The Brook + Wilde Lux mattress is available in a medium-firm feel, which the brand describes as the "perfect balance of support and sink".
We’d place it at a 6 out of 10 on the Sleep Hero firmness scale, where 1 is the softest and 10 is the firmest.
But do you need a medium-firm mattress?
Well, that’ll depend on both your personal preferences as well as your build and preferred sleeping position.
As a general guideline:
- Lighter-weight people and side sleepers will do better on softer mattresses.
- Average-weight people, combination sleepers, and most back sleepers will do better on medium-firm mattresses.
- Heavier-weight back sleepers and stomach sleepers will do better on firmer mattresses.
This is because lighter-weight people and side sleepers need to sink into a mattress sufficiently to allow for optimal spinal alignment.
In contrast, heavier-weight people and back and front sleepers require a more supportive mattress for optimal spinal alignment.
Medium-firm mattresses are suitable for a wide range of sleepers and are a good place to start.
Luckily, Brook + Wilde offers you a 200-night trial period.
If you’re not satisfied, you can either swap your mattress for one of the other models or get a full refund.
Does the Brook + Wilde mattress sleep hot?
Hot sleepers tend to shy away from memory foam mattresses.
This is because memory foam is notorious for retaining heat, creating a warm and cosy environment. 🥵
That may be great if you easily feel cold at night, but not ideal if you’re a hot sleeper or a heavy sweater.
The Brook + Wilde Lux mattress, thankfully, is much cooler than your standard memory foam mattress.
- The mattress cover is particularly breathable, allowing for enhanced airflow.
- The springs at the core of the mattress create natural ventilation channels, allowing for a steady flow of air.
These two features carry heat and moisture away from the body and help keep the mattress temperature well-regulated. 🧊
But, some Brook and Wilde mattress reviews state that the mattress will still feel warmer than pure pocket-sprung mattresses.
If you’re a very heavy sweater, we’d suggest staying away from anything with memory foam and opting for a sprung mattress instead.
We recommend some of our favourites in our guide on pocket-sprung mattresses.
Brook + Wilde Lux mattress cover
The Brook + Wilde Lux mattress features a unique two-colour design with an iconic orange wave pattern. 🧡
The polyester and cotton cover is soft, hypoallergenic, and breathable.
It also has four carrying handles, which makes moving the mattress a lot easier.
You shouldn’t have to move it too often, though, as Brook + Wilde says you don’t have to flip or rotate the mattress. 😲
The cover also has a non-slip base, so it stays firmly on your bed.
How do I clean my Lux mattress cover?
Unfortunately, the Lux mattress cover is not removable and cannot be washed.
If you stain your mattress, you’d have to spot-clean it with a damp cloth. 🧽
We’d recommend investing in a good waterproof mattress protector to safeguard your mattress against stains, spills, dirt, bacteria, and moisture.
You could also opt for one of the more expensive Brook and Wilde mattresses (the Elite mattress, Ultima mattress, or the Perla mattress).
These all come with removable and machine-washable covers.
Our favourite mattress protectors:
What does the Brook + Wilde mattress cost?
The Lux mattress is the cheapest of the Brook + Wilde range.
It is marketed as a premium bed-in-a-box mattress, but actually offers phenomenal value for money. 💷
It’s comparable in price to products like the Simba Hybrid.
(Note: prices listed below are standard prices excluding any current coupons & discounts)
What other mattresses does Brook + Wilde sell?
We've hinted at this above, but the Brook and Wilde brand actually sells a whole selection of mattresses.
The Lux mattress is their flagship model.
Most of the others have the same basic structure, though also include a few more premium features.
- Brook + Wilde Elite mattress: This is a more luxurious version of the Lux with 8 layers, up to 3,500 pocket springs, and a removable mattress cover that can be machine-washed.
- Brook + Wilde Ultima mattress: This is a 10-layer luxury mattress with a cooling cover and dynamic airflow system.
- Brook + Wilde Perla mattress: This is a handmade, 14-layer mattress with over 7000 pocket springs, cashmere, bamboo, and wool.
The Brooke + Wilde Ultima and Brook + Wilde Perla will set you back more than a Tempur mattress!

Brook + Wilde mattress delivery conditions
Like other bed-in-a-box mattresses, Brook and Wilde mattresses are delivered rolled-up, vacuum-packed, and neatly packaged in a cardboard box. 📦
There are amazing benefits to choosing a bed-in-a-box mattress.
- Fast and efficient delivery.
- Ease in transporting the mattress up stairways or narrow passageways.
- Lower overall cost due to lower manufacturing and transport costs.
- Lower environmental impact.
Unlike other mattress brands, though, Brook + Wilde offers a free white-glove delivery service.
This two-man delivery service allows you to sit back and relax while your mattress is set up in a room of your choice.
Unfortunately, Brook + Wilde isn't quite as quick as other mattress brands.
You’ll have to wait up to 4 weeks to get your mattress delivered. 🗓
The more premium Brook + Wilde mattresses can take up to 12 weeks for customisation and delivery.
If you need a mattress in a hurry, you can opt for a mattress like the Simba Hybrid, which is delivered within 1 - 3 working days.
Some of the Silentnight mattresses are even delivered within 24 hours!
You won’t get premium delivery with any of these, though.
What happens to the mattress once unpacked?
As with all bed-in-a-box mattresses, your Lux mattress should expand as soon as it’s taken out of the box.
It’ll take a few hours to expand fully. ⏰
You may experience an odd chemical smell - called off-gassing - for the first few days.
This is completely normal, and the fumes aren’t toxic in any way. 🙌
It can be a little unpleasant, though, so make sure to ventilate your room well.
Can Brook + Wilde take away my old mattress?
Brook + Wilde also offers a mattress removal service. 🚛
For a small additional charge, they’ll take away your old mattress when they deliver the new one.
Simply select this option upon checkout.
Brook + Wilde is committed to mattress recycling, so old and returned mattresses are recycled or donated.
Which bed frame works well for the Brook and Wilde mattress?
You can place the Lux mattress on any bed frame as long as it provides a sturdy support base.
Slatted bases are great as they provide better airflow, but they can make your mattress feel softer and less supportive.
If you’re using a slatted frame, Brook + Wilde suggests that slats should be no more than 6 cm (2.4 inches) wide and not placed more than 10 cm (3.9 inches) apart.
This helps support the mattress optimally.
A divan base will offer a firmer foundation but may restrict air circulation.
Should you buy the Brook + Wilde Lux mattress?
The Brook + Wilde Lux mattress is an excellent mattress well-suited to a wide range of sleepers.
If you’re looking for a new mattress that offers phenomenal value for money and is likely to last a very long time, the Lux mattress is a great option.
We can recommend the Lux mattress to:
- Average-weight and light-weight sleepers
- Heavier-weight back and stomach sleepers
- Hot sleepers
- Restless sleepers
- People looking for a premium mattress at a great price
We would not recommend the mattress to heavier-weight side sleepers, very heavy sweaters, or people looking for a budget mattress in a hurry.
