Our review: Who is the Night Lark duvet most suitable for?

The Night Lark duvet is a popular choice from The Fine Bedding Company, and for good reason.

As a coverless duvet, it eliminates the need for a separate cover, offering a unique level of convenience.

Having tested the Night Lark duvet over several months, we were immediately impressed by the super soft and silky feel of the material - it genuinely felt gentler against the skin than a standard duvet cover.

The duvet also manages to strike a pleasant balance, feeling lightweight and cool while still providing a snug and warm embrace.

Overall, our experience highlighted the potential for a truly comfortable night's sleep. 💕

It's worth noting that Night Lark also offers a more premium Natural Cotton Waffle duvet, and we'll be drawing some comparisons between these options later in this review.

So, what are the advantages of choosing a Night Lark duvet over a traditional duvet with a separate cover?

The benefits are quite compelling:

  • No more duvet cover changes: Save time and effort when you're changing your bedding.
  • Space and cost savings: You won't need to store or purchase extra duvet covers.
  • Easy cleaning: The entire duvet is 100% machine-washable, promoting a fresher sleep environment.
  • Neutral style: The available colours are designed to complement most bedroom aesthetics.

However, it's important to keep in mind that the absence of a protective cover means that spills can be more problematic.

An accidental morning coffee mishap could lead to a permanent stain, potentially requiring the replacement of the entire duvet, which is a more significant expense than replacing just a duvet cover.

Its size might also not be suitable for all domestic washing machines - in our experience, it didn't fit in our standard machine, requiring a trip to the laundrette, which is tad more inconvenient.

We look at those all-important Night Lark washing instructions next. 👀

How do you wash a Night Lark coverless duvet?

One of the standout features of the Night Lark duvet is its convenience when it comes to cleaning.

This fully machine-washable duvet is designed for easy care, allowing you to maintain a fresh and hygienic sleep environment.

To wash your Night Lark duvet, simply place it in your machine with your usual laundry detergent and select a 40°C cycle.

Unlike some bedding items that can take ages to dry, the Night Lark duvet also boasts a fast-drying capability, often ready within approximately 90 minutes. ⏳

This quick turnaround means you can easily incorporate washing your Night Lark duvet into your regular laundry routine.

Does the Night Lark duvet fit into every washing machine?

While the Night Lark duvet is designed to be machine washable, it's crucial to consider your washing machine's capacity. 😬

The Fine Bedding Company recommends using a large capacity machine, ideally with a limit of 10kg or more. 😅

We only had a smaller 7kg capacity machine to test, and found that we couldn't achieve a full wash as the duvet was too compressed inside the machine.

Therefore, we strongly advise checking the capacity of your washing machine before purchasing a Night Lark coverless duvet to ensure it can be cleaned effectively at home.

Can you tumble dry a Night Lark duvet?

The Night Lark coverless duvet is also tumble drier friendly. 🙌

You can simply place your freshly washed Night Lark duvet in the tumble dryer and run it until it's completely dry.

However, given its fast-drying nature, you might find that simply air-drying the duvet in a well-ventilated room is sufficient and can save on energy.

Always refer to the specific product details and care instructions that come with your Night Lark duvet for the most accurate and up-to-date guidance on washing and drying.

This will help you keep your duvet in the best possible condition for years to come.

Night Lark duvet sustainable design and composition

The Night Lark duvet comes in 4.5 and 10.5 tog options and a range of calming pastel colours like twilight blue, cloud grey, polar white, and meadow green.

This clever coverless duvet features a soft polyester cover filled with 100% Smartfil® polyester fibres, made sustainably from recycled PET bottles. ♻️

It even comes in a handy reusable polyester duffle bag.

The design is simple and elegant: The classic option we tested features a subtle wave pattern that helps the duvet stay plump and the filling evenly distributed, while matching piping along the edges adds a neat finish.

While the standard Night Lark has a subtle, neutral style, bolder options are available:

  • Look out for new designs like Tufted Dots and Gingham Print, as well as limited editions such as geometric Abstract Waves and Painted Stripes, or the floral Pastel Palms.
  • Special collaborations, like the Eleanor Bowmer [1] range with leopard and rainbow prints, also offer more vibrant choices.

With their evolving designs and collaborations, it's worth keeping an eye on the Night Lark collection to find a style that truly resonates with you.

Night Lark duvet sizes & tog ratings

The Night Lark duvet is designed to fit all standard UK bed sizes perfectly.

You can find it in the following dimensions:

  • Night Lark duvet single: 135 x 200 cm (approximately 54" x 78")
  • Night Lark duvet double: 200 x 200 cm (approximately 78" x 78")
  • Night Lark duvet king size: 230 x 220 cm (approximately 90" x 86")
  • Night Lark duvet super king size: 260 x 220 cm (approximately 102" x 86")

We often advise our readers that choosing a duvet one size larger than your mattress can contribute to that luxurious, hotel-style look in your bedroom. 🤩

Plus, it's a game-changer for couples, as it minimises that midnight duvet tug-of-war!

When it comes to warmth, the Night Lark duvet is available in two key tog ratings:

  • Night Lark duvet 4.5 tog: This lighter option is ideal for summer months or for those who tend to feel warm while sleeping.
  • Night Lark duvet 10.5 tog: This warmer duvet is perfect for all-seasons convenience, colder winter nights, or for individuals who prefer a cosier feel.

By offering these two tog options, the Night Lark duvet caters to a range of temperature preferences, helping you stay comfortable throughout the year.

Does the Night Lark duvet sleep hot?

The Night Lark duvet is designed with a lightweight and breathable construction. 🌬

In our experience, it managed to strike a good balance, feeling comfortably snug on cooler evenings without becoming excessively hot during warmer periods.

However, it's worth noting that the standard Night Lark duvet uses synthetic fibres in its construction, which, generally speaking, aren't the most naturally cooling materials available.

So if you're a hot sleeper, we'd recommend the following:

  • If you generally sleep hot, we would recommend considering the Night Lark duvet in the 4.5 tog rating. This lighter tog will naturally feel less insulating and help prevent overheating during the night.
  • Another excellent option for hot sleepers within the Night Lark range is the Night Lark Cotton Waffle duvet. The cotton cover of this alternative is known for its enhanced breathability, promoting better airflow and helping to wick away moisture, which can contribute to a cooler and drier sleep environment. 🌡

In our tests, the Night Lark Waffle duvet did feel noticeably drier and cooler compared to the standard Night Lark version.

Night Lark duvet prices and deals

One of the first things folks consider when buying a new duvet is the cost.

The Night Lark coverless duvet typically falls within a reasonable price range of £45 to £115 - significantly lower than other stand-out options like the Panda Cloud Duvet and the Simba Hybrid Duvet, both of which start from £100+.

We reckon the Night Lark offers excellent value for money, particularly when you factor in that no separate duvet cover is required.

And here's a little extra tip to save you some pennies if you're after Night Lark duvet discount codes:

You can currently get 15% off products from The Fine Bedding Company by using our exclusive discount code "SLEEP15".

It's always a good idea to have a peek at our dedicated discounts page before you make a purchase.

The two options: Night Lark duvet vs Night Lark Cotton Waffle duvet

We also put the Night Lark Waffle duvet to the test, a reversible option designed to offer a cooler and more luxurious sleep experience. 👑

The Night Lark Natural Cotton Waffle duvet is crafted with a filling of 100% Smartfil® microfibre and features a cover made from 100% sustainably-sourced BCI cotton [2].

So, how do these two duvets from the Night Lark range stack up against each other?

Here's a comparison based on our testing:

Night Lark Duvet (Standard) Night Lark Waffle Duvet (Cotton)
Comfort/Feel Lighter overall with a softer and silkier feel Slightly heavier feel - more textured and substantial
Temperature Sleeps slightly warmer Sleeps slightly cooler and drier
Washing Dries significantly faster Dries more slowly
Price Generally more budget-friendly Typically more expensive
Durability May be less durable over the long term Feels more durable and likely to last longer

Our preference leaned slightly towards the standard (and generally more affordable) Night Lark duvet due to its immediate softness against the skin.

However, the Night Lark Waffle duvet stands out as an excellent choice for hot sleepers or those who tend to feel warm at night - its cotton cover contributes to its moisture-wicking properties, helping to keep you feeling drier throughout the night. 🌱

The Night Lark Cotton Waffle duvet also exudes a sense of durability and quality, suggesting it will withstand frequent washing while maintaining its premium feel.

night lark versus cotton waffle

If price isn't a concern and you're lookign for a durable duvet suitable for hot sleepers, the Night Owl Waffle duvet is your best bet.

But we think the standard Night Lark duvet is a fantastic option for a luxurious night's sleep for most sleepers.

Night Owl duvet delivery & return conditions

The Fine Bedding Company offers free delivery on all orders exceeding £75, which - unfortunately - would typically not include the Night Lark duvet.

However, delivery prices are affordable and vary between £4 and £10, depending on your postcode.

Our test Night Lark duvet arrived promptly via DPD [3] within a few days of placing the order, but for those needing their new duvet urgently, a Priority Next Day delivery option is also available for an additional fee. 🚚💨

Both the standard and waffle versions of the Night Lark duvet are delivered in protective plastic packaging made from 100% recycled and recyclable materials.

night lark duvet duffle bag

Furthermore, each duvet comes with a handy reusable duffle bag, crafted from the same soft fibres as the duvet itself.

This is particularly useful for travel or sleepovers. 🧳

What is the Night Owl duvet returns policy?

While the Night Lark duvet does not come with a sleep trial period, The Fine Bedding Company offers a 30-day free returns policy. ✅

To be eligible for a return, the duvet must be unused and returned in its original packaging, following their standard returns procedure.

For those seeking the opportunity to actually try a duvet at home for a longer period before committing, we'd recommend the Panda Cloud duvet, which comes with a 30-day money-back sleep trial.

Does the Night Owl duvet come with a warranty?

It's important to note that the Night Lark duvet does not include a specific guarantee or warranty period.

A warranty typically protects your purchase against manufacturing defects for a set duration.

Other duvets from popular brands, including the Panda Cloud duvet, DreamCloud duvet, and the Hypnia All-Seasons duvet come with 2- to 5-year guarantees.

Should you buy a Night Lark coverless duvet?

Despite the lack of a trial period and guarantee, we think the Night Lark duvet is a wise choice for everyone. 🦉

It’s the softest, comfiest and most easy-to-care-for duvet we’ve ever tested - and there’s been a few!

If you’ve got a big enough washing machine, purchasing the Night Lark duvet is a no-brainer.

So, what are you waiting for?

P.S. It's worth remembering that the Night Lark was previously called the Night Owl coverless duvet, and you may still occasionally see it branded as such.
