Emma Hybrid mattress composition
The Emma Hybrid is a high-quality hybrid mattress. 👽
And what is a hybrid?
As the name suggests, this type of mattress combines different materials to create one superior product.
The hybrid Emma spring mattress combines the best features of memory foam mattresses and pocket sprung mattresses to create a breathable, supportive, and comfortable sleeping surface. ☁️
The mattress features four different layers.
The four layers are:
- Patented Airgocell foam
- Supportive mini pocket springs
- Viscoelastic memory foam
- Supportive HRX foam
It also features a fully removable and washable top cover. 🧼
Emma Hybrid mattress layers
Let's look at the four layers of the Emma Hybrid in a tad more detail.
1. A top layer of patented Airgocell foam (4 cm / 1.5 inches)
This top comfort layer is made of open-pored, breathable foam. 💨
It provides a comfortable sleeping surface but also limits motion transfer, so you'll feel more comfortable in bed with a partner.
2. Supportive conical pocket springs (2 cm / 0.7 inches)
The second layer of the mattress features an average of 2000 individually wrapped pocket springs, placed deep between two layers of foam. 🌀
The pocket springs provide support.
3. Viscoelastic memory foam (3 cm / 1.1 inches)
The third part of the mattress is a pressure-relieving memory foam layer.
This gives the mattress orthopaedic qualities, adapting perfectly to your shape for that body-hugging comfort. 🤗
4. A base layer of supportive HRX foam (16 cm / 6.3 inches)
This cold foam base layer adds overall stability and support to the mattress.
It also features unique contour zones, enhancing the mattress's ability to keep your body perfectly aligned for that orthopaedic feel.
Emma Hybrid firmness rating
The Emma Hybrid is described as a medium-firm mattress, but we think it definitely falls on the firmer end of the scale.
We'd place it at a 6.5 out of 10 on the Sleep Hero firmness scale, where 1 is the softest and 10 is the firmest.
This is surprising since Emma UK claims the Hybrid is softer than the Emma Original. 🤔
We found the Emma Original a little too soft, but the Hybrid was the perfect in-between.
Does the Emma Hybrid mattress offer enough support?
When we tried the mattress for our Emma Hybrid review, we were pleasantly surprised at just how supportive it felt - especially if you're of average weight.
With its unique combination of materials and the zoned base layer, the Emma Hybrid manages to offer great support while keeping your spine in healthy alignment. 📏
This is achieved in two ways:
- Offering more support for the lighter parts of your body, like your feet and head.
- Allowing the heavier parts of your body, like your shoulders and pelvis, to sink in more deeply.
The illustration below shows how these two factors work together:
This optimally aligned spine not only feels more comfortable, but it's also better for you. 🥰
A good mattress can help if you have any orthopaedic concerns or struggle with upper or lower back pain.
Can the Emma Hybrid support heavier-weight people?
We thought the Emma Hybrid offered the perfect level of support in all sleeping positions and for a wide variety of sleepers of different genders, sizes, and weights.
But, if you're larger than average, the mattress may not be able to give you the support you need.
Even though this is a medium-firm option, heavier-weight people often require much more support.
We'd recommend that heavier-weight people opt for pure innerspring mattresses, which are often much firmer and can be much more supportive than foam or hybrid models.
How good is the edge support?
The Emma Hybrid offered pretty great edge support. ⛰
- We could sleep right up to the end of the mattress and never felt like support dwindled.
- We could sit on the edge of the mattress and didn't feel like the mattress sank down too much.
Support with sitting on the edge could have been slightly better, but if you're not planning on spending hours sitting on the side of your bed, you'll be fine.
Sleeping right up to the edge definitely felt supportive enough.
This means that you can comfortably make use of the entire width of the mattress, which is great news if you're sharing your bed with a partner.
How comfortable is the Emma Hybrid?
We weren't sure what to expect when we first started our Emma Hybrid mattress review, but it turns out this is a very comfortable mattress.
We slept like a dream. 😴
Even though the pocket spring layer adds more support, the upper comfort layers of Airgocell foam and memory foam give the Emma Hybrid a soft and pleasant feeling.
Memory foam is known for its high degree of comfort.
It adapts to the contours of your body, supporting you where needed, allowing your muscles to relax sufficiently, and relieving any pressure points.
Is the Emma Hybrid suited to restless sleepers?
Memory foam can sometimes be a little difficult to move around on.🕺
This is because of the characteristic memory imprint, where the foam keeps the shape of your imprint for a little longer.
The images below demonstrate this memory imprint well:
The Emma Hybrid still gives you memory foam comfort, but without the trouble of moving.
We found the mattress very easy to turn around on.
This makes it a great choice for more restless sleepers. 💃
Does the Emma Hybrid sleep hot?
The combination of materials in the Emma Hybrid allows for great breathability.
Memory foam mattresses generally offer a warmer sleep as memory foam retains more heat. 🥵
But, the patented Airgocell foam layer and the pocket springs counteract this, allowing for greater air circulation and preventing heat from being trapped in the mattress.
The space between the pocket springs in the mattress's core is especially important in enhancing airflow.
In addition to these factors, the Hybrid also features a 3D mesh cover, which further enhances breathability. ❄️
This is great news for people who prefer a more temperature-neutral sleep.
We slept comfortably on the Emma Hybrid all year round.
What if you're a heavy sweater?
If you're a hot sleeper, you may still notice that you sweat heavily with the Emma Hybrid.
As long as you're comfortable, this isn't a train smash.
After all, the mattress cover (which we'll look at next) is removable and machine-washable, so it's easy to get rid of any sweat stains. 😅
But, if you want something a little cooler, you'd probably do better on a pure spring mattress.
You could also consider the more advanced Emma Premium, which features full-size pocket springs and offers much greater breathability than the Emma Hybrid.
Is the Emma Hybrid a good choice for couples?
The foams used in the Emma Hybrid are great for limiting motion transfer. 🦘
Motion transfer refers to how well movement and vibrations travel through the mattress.
If a mattress has low motion transfer, movement is absorbed sufficiently and won't travel through the mattress.
This means you won't be disturbed by your partner's movements at night.
Since the Emma Hybrid has low motion transfer, it is a good mattress for couples. 👩❤️👨
The springs are also noiseless, meaning there's no squeakiness and creaking noises that could disturb you.
If you're sharing your bed with a partner, though, we would highly recommend choosing a larger mattress size, like the Emma Hybrid king-size mattress (or even super king, if space allows).
Larger mattress sizes ensure that both partners have enough space to sleep comfortably.
Emma Hybrid mattress cover
The Emma Hybrid mattress is encased in a stylish grey-and-white cover made predominantly of polyester.
The top part of the mattress cover is completely removable and machine-washable at 60℃.
This ensures your mattress stays clean and fresh no matter what. 🛀
It also makes the mattress a hypoallergenic choice suitable for people prone to allergies.
The bottom cover contains a non-slip base, which allows your mattress to sit firmly on your bed frame.
Temperature control
The mattress cover also plays a large role in ensuring good temperature regulation.
Not only is the cover fitted with temperature-regulating fibres, but it also features 3D mesh to help wick away moisture.
This keeps the cover and the mattress as a whole more breathable. 💨
Enhanced air circulation and breathability ensure that your mattress will remain more temperature-neutral, resulting in an overall more comfortable sleep.
Side handles for easy transportation
Conveniently, the Emma Hybrid mattress cover also has side handles.
These make transporting the mattress much easier.
You don't need to flip your mattress, but turning it regularly is recommended.
The Emma Hybrid is also a relatively low-weight mattress, coming in at only 35 kg (77 lbs) for the largest super king size.
Need extra protection?
Even though the Emma Hybrid cover is washable, we'd always recommend adding a mattress protector.
Mattress protectors further safeguard your mattress from any spills, damage, and stains.
The Emma mattress protector is a great option. 👌
Emma Hybrid mattress sizes
Emma Hybrid mattresses are available in most standard UK mattress sizes. 🇬🇧
These include:
- Emma Hybrid single mattresses: 90 x 190 cm (3’ x 6’3”)
- Emma Hybrid small double mattresses: 120 x 190 cm (4' x 6'3")
- Emma Hybrid double mattresses: 135 x 190 cm (4’6” x 6’3”)
- Emma Hybrid king-size mattresses: 150 x 200 cm (5’ x 6’6”)
- Emma Hybrid super-king-size mattresses: 180 x 200 cm (6’ x 6’6”)
The right size for you depends on your personal requirements, budget, and the size of your bedroom.
That said, we'd recommend that couples opt for a double mattress as an absolute minimum, though the Emma Hybrid mattress king size will sleep more comfortably. 👑
Emma Hybrid mattress depth
All Emma Hybrid mattresses have a height of 25 cm (10 inches).
This is on par with most bed-in-a-box mattresses, meaning all your standard bedding should fit quite comfortably.

It's also a great height for box spring beds and divan bases. 🛌
Deeper mattresses look better on a divan base and make it easier to get in and out of bed.
This is especially important if you have orthopaedic concerns or are elderly.
Emma mattress weight limit
The Emma Hybrid mattress has been designed to support a maximum weight of 130 kg (286 lbs) per person.
People heavier than this will not get enough support and are likely to sink into the mattress too deeply.
This can lead to lower back pain and orthopaedic problems in the long term.
We'd recommend that larger builds opt for pocket spring mattresses.
Emma Hybrid mattress prices
The Emma Hybrid mattress is more expensive than the all-foam Emma Original mattress.
But, it's pretty on par with other hybrid mattresses of similar quality, like the Simba Hybrid.

How do you unpack the Emma Hybrid?
Bed-in-a-box mattresses seem confusing to those who've never tried them.
But, unpacking a bed-in-a-box mattress is actually really simple.
Here's a step-by-step guide:
- Place the mattress box on your bed frame.
- Cut open the box and roll the mattress onto your bed frame.
- Remove the plastic wrapping and unroll the mattress.
- Let it expand.
Your mattress should start expanding immediately after unpacking, but it may take 4 - 6 hours to reach full expansion. ⏰
Off-gassing is completely normal
You may notice a slight odour when you first unpack your mattress.
This is entirely normal and a side effect of the manufacturing process.
The smell is not toxic, but can be a little unpleasant.
We recommend you unpack your Emma Hybrid in a well-ventilated room and allow the smell to disappear fully before use. 🏠
This shouldn't take more than a few days at most.
What do you do with your old mattress?
Of course, you can dispose of your old mattress yourself.
We give you tips on how to do this in our article on mattress disposal.
But, conveniently, Emma also offers an old mattress removal service.
At a small additional cost, they will pick up your old mattress when they deliver your new one, so you don't have to deal with the hassle of it at all.
Emma Hybrid trial period
Emma products used to come with a standard 100-night trial period.
But, this has now been extended to a 200-day risk-free trial period. 🥳
Your trial period begins with mattress delivery.
You will then have the chance to try out the mattress for 200 days in the comfort of your own home. 🏡
Getting used to a new mattress may take a little while.

If, after this period, you’re not completely happy with the Emma Hybrid, you can simply return it.
Returns are free, and Emma will organise everything.
All you need to do is contact Emma’s customer service via the returns portal.

It's comfortable and offers a good night's sleep with adequate support, pressure relief, and optimal spinal alignment.
We can recommend the Emma Hybrid mattress to:
- People of light or average weights.
- People who enjoy a medium-firm sleeping surface.

After all, it's only by sleeping on a mattress for a few weeks that you'll know if it's really right for you.
