Comfort and firmness
Overall, we found the Emma Original mattress incredibly comfortable.
It is a soft mattress but it still offers sufficient support and stability.
We'd rate it at 4 out of 10 on the Sleep Hero firmness scale.
Our team members best described the feeling of lying on the Emma Original as "pleasantly soft". This is larger due to the combination of the two upper comfort layers.
Both Airgocell and memory foam are highly adaptable and relieve pressure well.
Since the Emma Original is more on the soft side, it is particularly comfortable when sleeping on your side.
This is because the mattress allows your body to sink in sufficiently in heavier body areas, like the shoulders and pelvis.
Yet, it still offers enough support for the lighter parts of your body.
This combination allows your spine to remain optimally aligned.
This also makes the Emma Original a great choice if you're looking for a mattress to help reduce back pain or an orthopaedic mattress.
That said, the Emma Original mattress may be too soft for heavier-weight sleepers (averaging 90kg and more) or for people who sleep purely on their back or stomach.
These sleeping positions require more hip support, which the Emma Original may not give.
If you fall into this latter category, then we'd highly recommend you make use of the risk-free trial period to see if the mattress works for you.

A very comfortable sleeping climate
The Emma Original mattress offers a comfortable sleeping climate.
Even though memory foam is generally warmer and retains more heat than other mattress materials, the Emma mattress manages to regulate temperature well.
This is primarily because the Airgocell layers and fine-meshed top cover noticeably reduce heat storage.
The unique combination of Airgocell foam and memory foam, then, works, perfectly to reduce the overall sleeping climate and results in a comfortable temperature.
We did not sweat during our test sleep - despite testing in 25-degree summer weather.
On the right, you'll see the results of our temperature tests.
Our tests showed that the mattress only retained heat exactly where the test sleeper lay.
The rest of the mattress remained temperature-neutral.
As soon as the sleeper moved, the previously-heated areas cooled down effectively due to the cooling properties of the mattress.
This results in an overall temperature-neutral sleeping climate.
If a cooler sleeping climate is important to you, then you may want to also consider innerspring mattresses, which offer great breathability.
Low motion transfer makes this mattress great for couples
The Emma Original has fairly low motion transfer and high point elasticity, which is great for couples.
The foam layers effectively absorb and dampen movements, ensuring that motion will not be carried across the mattress.
Instead, motion is absorbed so that others won't feel it.
This ensures that you won't wake up unnecessarily if your partner tosses or turns at night, resulting in restful sleep for both.
In order to really test the motion transfer, we've recorded movement with a measuring device. We recorded movements of a light-weight sleeper, a heavy-weight sleeper, and getting in and out of bed.
As you can see, the device hardly recorded any movement, which is testament to the good motion transfer capabilities of the mattress.
Sharing your bed with a partner? We suggest choosing a larger size mattress for a more comfortable sleep. While double beds are sufficient, we suggest that you consider the Emma king-size mattress as a good starting point. This size will ensure that both you and your partner have ample space to toss and turn.
