How does the Emma Premium compare to the Emma Original and Emma Hybrid?

The Emma Premium is Emma's most advanced mattress available in the UK.

We go into full details of this mattress's composition, firmness, and comfort in the Emma Premium review below.

But, here's a quick overview to help you get started if you're interested in comparing this brand new mattress to the more established alternatives.

The Emma Premium is best described as a mattress with a composition most similar to the Emma Hybrid but with the firmness of the Emma Original.

That makes sense, of course, as the Emma Premium was previously called the Emma Original Hybrid,

The same level of comfort

Like the Emma Original and the Emma Hybrid, this mattress features upper comfort layers of Airgocell foam and memory foam.

This means that you'll get the same level of sleeping-on-a-cloud comfort as you do with those two mattresses ☁️

Better support and breathability

But, the Emma Premium also features full-size pocket springs in a foam wall encasing and additional cold foam layers for exceptional point elasticity, edge-to-edge support, stability, and breathability.

The Emma Premium offers far more stability and breathability than the Emma Original and Emma Hybrid.

The Emma Hybrid is similar in its hybrid design and contains springs.

But, these are mini pocket springs with different characteristics and a far less luxurious feel.d.

If you are considering the other Emma mattresses or want more detail on these, we'd recommend you:

Emma Premium mattress composition

The Emma Premium is a five-layer luxury mattress that combines various high-quality foams with a core of 12.5 cm (4.9 inches) pocket springs.

The result?

One of Emma's most advanced and innovative mattresses.

This is a no-turn mattress with a specific right-way-up, but you still need to rotate the mattress regularly.

The foam layers, from top to bottom:

  • A top comfort layer of breathable Airgocell® memory foam.
  • A layer of pressure-relieving visco-elastic memory foam.
  • A secondary layer of Airgocell® memory foam.
  • A spring layer of 12.5 cm (4'9") individually wrapped pocket springs.
  • Sturdy base layer.

BUY EMMA PREMIUM

Emma Original Hybrid mattress layers

Emma Premium mattress layers

1. Top comfort layer of Airgocell® foam

Emma's trademarked Airgocell® foam forms the top comfort layer of the Emma Premium mattress.

This foam is more breathable than traditional foams, specifically designed to reduce heat and result in a cooler sleep 🆒

This layer is also pressure-relieving and body-contouring, providing superior comfort and that "sleeping on a cloud" feeling you can expect from Emma mattresses.

2. Pressure-relieving memory foam

Visco-elastic memory foam forms the next layer.

Memory foam is often recommended for orthopaedic mattresses as it adapts to the body's shape and relieves pressure well.

This makes the mattress suitable for those struggling with back problems.

The memory foam has been specifically positioned towards the top of the mattress to allow heat to escape ♨️

One downfall of memory foam is that it retains heat quite well, so it needs to be combined with more breathable materials to reduce the temperature.

The memory foam also provides a final layer of cushioning before the sturdier cold foam and pocket springs.

3. Second layer of Airgocell® memory foam.

This is an additional cooling layer underneath the memory foam, allowing heat to escape through the bottom of the mattress.

4. Spring layer core with zoned pocket springs

The zoned pocket sprung layer forms the core of the mattress.

In contrast to some other hybrids like the Emma Hybrid or the Simba Hybrid, which feature mini springs, the Emma Premium features a layer of full-sized pocket springs with a height of 12.5 cm (4.9 inches).

This pocket sprung layer enhances breathability and support.

Each spring is individually wrapped, meaning it can respond to isolated movements, enhancing point elasticity, pressure relief capabilities, and motion isolation.

The pocket spring core is encased by foam walls, allowing for greater stability across the surface of the mattress and enabling edge-to-edge support without the feeling that you'll roll off the mattress if you sleep too far on the side.

5. Base foam layer

The lower foam layer acts as a final supportive and solid base for the mattress.

Emma Premium composition

Emma Premium mattress firmness

With the Emma Premium, the Emma mattress brand set out to design a product with a hybrid construction - like the Emma Hybrid - but the firmness of the Emma Original.

Hence also it's previous name of the Emma Original Hybrid.

The result?

A hybrid mattress with a soft and comfortable feel.

Emma rates the Premium as a medium-firm mattress that's equal in firmness to the Emma Original.

We'd rate it as slightly firmer and have placed it at 5.5 out of 10 on the Sleep Hero firmness scale, with 1 being the softest and 10 the firmest.

Try the mattress to see if it's right for you

That said, there have been some reports of people interpreting the Emma Premium as much firmer than the Emma Original.

Different types of people will get a different feel on the mattress, and we'd suggest making use of Emma's risk-free trial period to see if the mattress is right for you.

Give yourself at least a few days to see how your body feels on the Emma Premium 🛌

If, after a few weeks, you're not convinced that the mattress is right for you, you can return it - free of charge - for a full refund.

Good edge support

The pocket springs are encased by sturdy foam walls, which allow for greater stability across the surface of the mattress.

This means that you can experience the same level of firmness no matter where you lie on the mattress.

This edge-to-edge support is great if you want to enjoy the full width of the mattress, which is especially important if you're sharing your bed with a partner.

Emma Original Hybrid firmness

Emma Original Hybrid mattress

What it feels like to sleep on the Emma Premium mattress

The Emma Premium mattress is pleasantly soft and comfortable, but also offers excellent support and stability.

This is largely due to its unique composition.

Maximum comfort

The upper comfort layers provide much of that sleeping-on-a-cloud feeling you also experience on the Emma Original.

Both Airgocell and memory foam are highly adaptable foams that conform to your body shape.

This provides body-hugging comfort 🤗

This adaptability also allows your muscles to relax fully and reduces the build-up of pressure points.

Memory foam mattresses have a distinct memory imprint, which provides that body-contouring comfort.

But it also usually makes turning around on this foam a little cumbersome as you're likely to feel "stuck" in it.

This is not the case with the Emma Premium.

Despite its upper memory foam layer, turning around on this mattress is easy.

Support for all sleeping positions

The lower layers of cold foam and individually wrapped pocket springs provide most of the mattress' support and stability.

Pocket springs are very point-elastic, meaning that they will give way exactly where the bulk of your weight lies, but remain unaffected in the other areas.

This allows for optimal stability and makes the Emma Premium suitable for all sleeping positions.

Indeed, the mattress' excellent support is even one of the stand-out features named specifically by Which? Consumers Association in their report on the mattress 🥇

The Emma Premium is firm enough to offer enough stability for stomach sleepers and back sleepers, keeping the body and spine straight.

But, it also provides enough sinkage for side sleepers, allowing the heavier body parts to sink in more deeply than the lighter parts.

This also keeps the spine well-aligned.

No matter your sleep position, your spine will remain straight.

This makes the Emma Premium an excellent mattress for orthopaedic concerns and ensures that you won't wake up with any lower back pain or tension.

BUY EMMA PREMIUM

Excellent temperature regulation

The Emma Premium mattress has an excellent design that emphasises enhanced breathability.

This makes the mattress suitable for any type of sleeper, even heavy sweaters.

Memory foam generally retains more heat than other types of foam, making it unsuitable for people who prefer a cooler sleep.

But the combination of the different foams and the hybrid design counteracts this sufficiently.

Spring mattresses are usually the most breathable, as the space between the springs allows for a natural ventilation channel, which enhances airflow.

This increased air circulation cools the mattress 💨

A warm mattress that doesn't feel clammy

Even though the top layers of the Emma Premium are still foam-based and the mattress will feel warmer than a pure spring mattress, any moisture will be effectively wicked away, and you'll be able to sleep comfortably.

This makes it one of the best mattresses for heavy sweaters.

If, however, you don't like the feel of the mattress and prefer an even cooler option, we'd suggest going for a pure pocket spring mattress.

The good thing about the Emma Premium is that you can try it out and return it free of charge if you're not happy 😃

We detail the trial period a bit further down.

Is the Emma Premium a good choice for couples?

Whether or not a mattress is deemed suitable for couples is largely determined by its level of motion transfer.

Motion transfer refers to how much movement is carried across the mattress.

Some mattresses, like the Emma Original, have very low motion transfer, making them an excellent choice for couples 👩‍❤️‍👨

But, the Emma Original doesn't have excellent edge support, so you can't make use of the full width of the mattress and would need to invest in a wider mattress, like a king-size mattress, to fully enjoy it with a partner.

The Emma Premium, in contrast, has excellent edge support.

So, you'll be able to enjoy the full width of the mattress no matter if you choose the double-size Emma Premium mattress or the super-king-size Emma Premium mattress.

Its motion isolation, though, isn't as good - it's not horrid, but it could be slightly better.

This means that you'll feel some movement carried across the mattress.

It shouldn't be enough to disturb your sleeping partner but may be worth paying attention to if one of you is a very restless sleeper or of a heavier build, which can influence the level of motion transfer.

Emma Premium mattress cover

The Emma Premium features a grey-and-white mattress cover in the same style that you've come to expect from the Emma mattress brand.

There are three parts to the mattress cover:

  • The removable and washable top cover, made of 99% polyester and 1% elastane.
  • Breathable side cover made of 100% polyester.
  • Sturdier base cover made of 87% polyester and 13% polypropylene.

Polyester is durable and hydrophobic, meaning it will dry very quickly - an added protection for your mattress.

The top cover is also fully removable and machine-washable at 40℃.

This makes the Emma Premiuma great hypoallergenic choice suitable for people prone to allergies 🤧

BUY EMMA PREMIUM

Emma Original Hybrid mattress cover

Emma Original Hybrid mattress cover side handles

Side handles for easier rotation

Even though the Emma Premium is a no-turn mattress that doesn't need to be flipped over, it still needs to be rotated from head to toe regularly.

The cover features four convenient side handles that can assist with this rotation.

The mattress is quite heavy, though:

  • 28.5 kg (62 lbs) for the Emma Premium double mattress.
  • 33 kg (72 lbs) for the Emma Premiumking mattress.
  • 40 kg (88 lbs) for the Emma Premium super king mattress.

Be aware of this if you have a bad back or are elderly, as you may need some help unpacking and regularly rotating the mattress.

Protecting your mattress

Even though the Emma Premium mattress features a hydrophobic cover that's fully machine-washable at a high temperature, we'd still recommend investing in a waterproof mattress protector.

This is a durable mattress that will last you for at least 10 years, so you want to make sure you can extend its lifespan and protect it from spills, dirt, stains, and bacteria.

You can buy a replacement Emma cover, but we'd also recommend investing in the Emma waterproof mattress protector 👇

Emma Premium mattress sizes

Emma Premium mattresses are only available in the larger of the standard UK sizes.

These include:

  • Emma Premium double mattresses: 135 x 190 cm (4’6” x 6’3”)
  • Emma Premium king-size mattresses: 150 x 200 cm (5’ x 6’6”)
  • Emma Premium super-king-size mattresses: 180 x 200 cm (6’ x 6’6”)

If you're looking for single or small double mattresses within the Emma mattress brand, you can consider the Emma Original or the Emma Hybrid.

We can also recommend the high-quality Nectar memory foam mattress.

Height of the Emma Premium

The pocket springs measure 12.5 cm (4'9"), and the bottom foam layer averages around 5.5 cm (5'5").

The top foam layers are much thinner.

The standard depth/height of the Emma Premium is 25 cm (10").

This is on par with most bed-in-a-box mattresses, meaning that your bed sheets and mattress protector should fit snugly.

Emma mattress awards

The Emma Premium is a Which?-approved mattress 🏆

Which? is the UK's best-known consumer association, and it carries out tests for a variety of products, including mattresses.

The Emma Premium scored a total of 79% in the Which? tests and has been named a Which? Best Buy mattress.

Notable features of the mattress include its durability, excellent support, and its breathability.

Emma Premium certifications

Emma is an environmentally conscious brand 🐧

Emma UK complies with strict testing and safety requirements during the manufacturing process and ensures that all Emma mattresses comply with the BS 7177 regulation.

This means that the mattress is fire-retardant.

Even though Emma is not an organic brand, products contain no animal-based components and are 100% vegan.

Emma mattress accessories

In addition to the Emma Premium mattress, Emma Original mattress, and the Emma Hybrid mattress, Emma UK also offers numerous mattress accessories to enhance your sleeping experience.

These include:

  • The replacement Emma mattress cover.
  • The waterproof Emma mattress protector.
  • The Emma Original pillow with interchangeable foam layers.
  • The softer Emma Premium microfibre pillow.
  • The 6.7 tog microfibre Emma Cloud duvet.

We've linked the mattress cover and the mattress protector above, but you'll find a snapshot of the other accessories and links to more information below.

Emma also offers a high-quality mattress topper in Europe, but this is not available in the UK.

We'd recommend you check out the Eve mattress topper as a good alternative.

Emma Premium delivery conditions

The Emma Premium mattress is delivered free of charge within 5 - 15 working days.

Free delivery is available within mainland UK 🇬🇧

Currently, Emma UK does not ship to the Channel Islands.

If you're in Ireland, you'll need to order via the Emma Ireland website.

Emma UK ships with UPS, DPD, and Rhenus.

Your new mattress is delivered rolled up and vacuum-sealed in a compact box specifically designed to fit through narrow passageways.

The box measures 45 x 45 x 110 cm (17" x 17" x 43") 📦

Technically, one person can handle the box, but the Emma Premium mattress is quite heavy, so we would recommend you unpack your new mattress with a friend or partner.

This is especially important if you're elderly or have back problems.

Can Emma remove my old mattress?

Emma UK offers an old mattress removal service at an additional cost.

You simply need to select this option upon checkout.

Due to the Covid-19 pandemic, couriers are not allowed to enter your home. You will need to bring your old mattress to your building's front door.

Couriers will then remove it when they deliver your new Emma mattress 🚚

Will my mattress expand automatically?

Your new Emma mattress will expand automatically once you have unpacked it, rolled it out on your bed frame, and removed the plastic wrapping.

Inflation can happen instantly but may take a few hours.

Don't be alarmed by off-gassing

You may experience some off-gassing when you unpack your new mattress.

This is a chemical smell emitted by new mattresses, but this is completely normal.

The smell should be faint, but sometimes it can be a little more pungent.

We'd recommend unwrapping your new mattress in a well-ventilated room and letting it air until the smell disappears.

Emma Premium trial period

All Emma mattresses come with a risk-free trial period.

This is usually a 100-night trial, but this has been extended to a 200-night trial due to the Covid-19 pandemic.

Your trial period begins with delivery.

Trial periods are common for bed-in-a-box mattresses bought online to compensate for the fact that you can't try out the mattress before you buy it.

We think the trial periods are even better than trying a mattress in-store, as it's decidedly difficult to tell if a mattress is right for you by just lying on it for a few minutes.

It can take your body up to three weeks to get used to a new mattress, especially if your previous mattress was vastly different.

If you've slept on your new mattress for a few weeks and you still feel a little uncomfortable or wake up with back pain, then you can return the Emma Premium - free of charge - and receive a full refund.

All you need to do is head to the returns portal on the Emma UK website and complete the process.

Risk-free trial period

Emma UK 10-year guarantee

The Emma Premium is a very high-quality product that's exceptionally durable.

Even after continued use, you should not experience any sagging or softening of the mattress.

To guarantee this durability, your Emma Premium comes with a 10-year warranty.

This warranty covers:

  • Any dips or sags greater than 2.5 cm (0.9 inches) despite correct use.
  • Cracks or hollows in the foam of the mattress within the first 6 months of use.
  • Mattress not inflating to the correct size despite a 2 cm (0.7") leeway across all dimensions.
  • Damaged zippers or faulty stitching.

In the event of any of these, Emma will exchange your mattress free of charge.

Should you buy the Emma Premium mattress?

Yes, if you have the budget available, then the Emma Premium mattress is an excellent choice.

As our Emma Premium review has hopefully shown, this is an exceptionally comfortable mattress that offers excellent support and stability.

We think it's best suited to:

Frequently asked questions

  • Can you tell me more about Emma?

Emma Sleep was first established in Germany in 2015.

Contrary to popular belief, the name of the company doesn't actually pay tribute to the company's founder.

Instead, it is merely called Emma Mattress because "Emma" was a popular name in Europe when the company was first set up.

Emma was started to make the mattress market as transparent and consumer-oriented as the market in the United States.

The company's founder, Max Laarmann, believed that consumers should be able to buy quality mattresses online and benefit from the advantages of a risk-free trial period.

Today, the Emma mattress is an award-winning product and one of the most popular online beds.

The company sells all over Europe, the UK, the USA, Australia, and India.

The brand also offers a selection of mattresses and sleep accessories.

  • Can I buy the Emma Premium on Amazon in the UK?

Yes, the Emma Premium mattress is available via Amazon UK.

  • What is the Emma Original Hybrid?

The Emma Premium was previously called the Emma Original Hybrid - primarily because it's a combination of the Emma Original and the Emma Hybrid.

We found the name a little confusing - and it looks like we weren't the only ones.

Emma has since renamed the Emma Original Hybrid and it's now called the Emma Premium.
