Nectar mattress composition

The Nectar is a thick and luxurious all-foam mattress.

It comprises three high-density foam layers.

These are:

  • Smart gel memory foam
  • Pressure-relieving memory foam
  • 7-zone supportive cold foam base

All foams are Certipur-certified to be free from harmful chemicals. Take a look at our FAQ section for more details on this.

Nectar mattress foam layers

1. A temperature-regulating smart gel memory foam layer

The smart sleep memory foam is 30x more breathable than traditional memory foam 💨

This effectively wicks away moisture and regulates body temperature, resulting in an overall cooler and more comfortable sleep.

2. Body-contouring memory foam

This high-quality memory foam layer provides body-hugging comfort.

It also reduces pressure points, allowing you to relax and drift off into your dreams 😴

3. 7-zone supportive cold foam base layer

The polyurethane cold foam base provides stability to the mattress.

It is divided into seven comfort zones, designed to give your body the proper supper exactly where it needs it most to keep your spine in a healthy alignment.

Healthy spinal alignment prevents back and shoulder pains 👌

Who is the Nectar mattress most suitable for?

The Nectar is one of the most comfortable mattresses we've ever slept on.

That's saying a lot - especially considering the more affordable price point of the Nectar memory foam mattress.

Nectar is owned by the same company that produces the more premium DreamCloud Luxury Hybrid mattress, so it's almost as if you're getting the premium product for a much better price!

The Nectar is an excellent mattress

The Nectar is an excellent mattress for average-weight sleepers in any sleeping position and heavier-weight side sleepers.

But, it may not be entirely suitable for heavier-weight stomach and back sleepers or for lighter-weight individuals and children 🧒

We elaborate on this a bit further down in the section on firmness.

The Nectar is also a great mattress for couples as it has very low motion transfer.

This means you won't feel your partner toss and turn at night.

Unfortunately, the Nectar doesn't have side handles, which makes moving the mattress quite challenging.

So, we wouldn't recommend it to the elderly or people with physical disabilities.

NECTAR + FREE GIFTS

Nectar mattress
With no carrying handles, the Nectar can be more difficult to move around

In a nutshell:

The Nectar mattress is best suited to: The Nectar mattress is less suited to:
Average-weight people with any sleeping preferences Heavier-weight back and stomach sleepers
Heavier-weight side sleepers Very light-weight sleepers or children
Couples The elderly

We expand upon each of these points in more detail further on 👇

Nectar mattress firmness

The Nectar is often described as a medium-firm mattress that suits most body types and preferred sleeping positions.

But, we'd certainly rank it on the firmer end of the scale.

We've rated it at 7 out of 10 on the Sleep Hero firmness scale, where 1 is the softest and 10 the firmest.

This makes it a great choice for anyone who prefers to lie "on top" of the mattress instead of "in" the mattress, which is a common sensation with memory foam mattresses.

Nectar mattress firmness

We measured how deep we sank into the foams

While we slept comfortably and felt supported, we wanted to make sure that we could rely on a bit of maths to help explain the firmness of the Nectar 🧮

So we measured how deeply we sank into the mattress.

By measuring sinkage, you can estimate how supportive the mattress will be for different sleepers.

It also gives a good indication of overall firmness.

NECTAR + FREE GIFTS

Measuring sinkage with a ruler on the Nectar mattress
Sinkage depths show how supportive a mattress will be for different sleepers

We used two different test sleepers in our Nectar mattress review and measured their sinkage depths in various positions.

We always measure at the same place:

  • If sleeping on the stomach, we measure at the stomach.
  • If sleeping on the side or back, we measure at the shoulders and hips.

These were our results:

Person A (1.75 m / 54 kg) Person B (1.78 m / 70 kg)
Sleeping on the back 4 cm (1.5 inches) 5 cm (1.9 inches)
Sleeping on the side 5 cm (1.9 inches) 5 cm (1.9 inches)
Sleeping on the stomach 4 cm (1.5 inches) 5 cm (1.9 inches)

As you can see, sinkage depths for different sleeping positions and body weights are very similar.

These values are standard for firmer mattresses.

Neither of our test sleepers sank in very deeply, which means that the Nectar mattress is able to offer just the right amount of support to average-weight sleepers 🙌

But, sinkage for the side position was a little more pronounced, especially for Person A.

This suggests the mattress allows for a little more give, enabling hips and shoulders to sink in more deeply.

This is great to achieve optimal spinal alignment.

Despite the firm feel, the mattress is very comfortable and offers enough sinkage to feel great, no matter your sleeping position.

Average edge support

What is edge support?

In a nutshell, it refers to the support a mattress gives at the very edge.

Ideally, support will be equal across the entire mattress, but this is not always the case - especially with memory foam mattresses!

Edge support with the Nectar mattress is average.

You won't get the feeling that you're sliding off the edge of the mattress, but it won't offer as much edge support as a pocket sprung mattress ⛰

It fared better than the Emma Original, though, which is a much softer memory foam mattress.

NECTAR + FREE GIFTS

Edge support on the Nectar mattress
Edge support with the Nectar mattress isn't great

Average edge support isn't a dealbreaker.

But, it can affect your purchasing decision if you're sharing your bed with a partner - or if you often need a moment to sit on the side of your bed before you get up to start the day!

If you're sharing your bed with a partner, we wouldn't recommend relying on the entire length and width of the mattress.

Instead, we'd suggest purchasing a larger mattress - like the king-size mattress 🤴

This will ensure that both you and your partner have enough space to move comfortably, without being hindered by edge support worries.

If good edge support is a non-negotiable, we'd recommend you try out the Simba Hybrid instead.

What does sleeping on the Nectar mattress feel like?

The Nectar mattress is one of the most comfortable mattresses we've tried 🏅

Not too firm, not too soft, but just right.

It's the Goldilocks of mattresses.

It's not only very comfortable but also supportive. We woke up feeling refreshed and without any aches or pains.

NECTAR + FREE GIFTS

Nectar memory foam mattress
The Goldilocks of mattresses

Is the Nectar mattress good for side sleepers?

The Nectar mattress is particularly comfortable if you like to sleep on your side.

This may seem surprising for a firmer mattress, but the Nectar manages to do two things very well:

  • It has a firm foundation that ensures your body is well supported.
  • It has soft upper layers that ensure your body can sink in where required.

This makes the Nectar mattress a perfect choice for side sleepers.

NECTAR + FREE GIFTS

Nectar mattress spinal alignmnet
The Nectar mattress ensures optimal spinal alignment

The heavier parts of your body - like the hips and shoulders - can sink into the softer foams while the lighter parts of your body remain well supported.

This ensures optimal spinal alignment 📏

Spinal alignment is important in every sleeping position but even more so for side sleepers as a mattress that's too soft or too firm can result in severe lower back pain.

The Nectar mattress ensures that side sleepers get the optimal support (and comfort).

Is the Nectar mattress good for orthopaedic concerns?

The Nectar mattress is made predominantly of memory foam and you'll find that it offers the typical memory effect.

This means that when pressure is applied to the foam, it will form an indent and stay in position for a short period before returning to its original shape.

This memory imprint gives a memory foam mattress its characteristic body-hugging comfort.

Take a look at the memory effect demonstrated in the images below 👇

Nectar memory foam layer

Hand on memory foam of Nectar

Memory imprint on Nectar mattress

This memory effect also makes memory foam mattresses a good choice for orthopaedic concerns.

Why?

Because the foam moulds so perfectly to your body, it provides good pressure relief and allows your muscles to relax.

This will help relieve aches and pains.

The Nectar isn't as soft or body-hugging as other memory foam mattresses (which is also why you can enjoy more firmness and why it's more suitable to restless sleepers), but it still offers enough of that contouring feel to aid its orthopaedic properties.

NECTAR + FREE GIFTS

Good support for average & larger builds

We recommend the Nectar mattress to people of average weight and size (under 90 kg / 198 lbs) who prefer a firmer feel.

The mattress is technically also suited to heavier-weight sleepers - the Nectar can support over 290 kg (639 lbs)!

It can certainly support heavier-weight side sleepers very well, who will sink in deeply enough for optimal spinal alignment.

NECTAR + FREE GIFTS

Back sleeper on the Nectar mattress
The Nectar mattress is good for average-weight sleepers

But, heavier weight stomach and back sleepers may find that the mattress doesn't support them well enough.

Despite its firm foundation, this is still a memory foam mattress, after all.

The foams are designed to be soft and supportive.

In addition, memory foam tends to heat up during the night and become softer.

This means that it may support a heavier-weight sleeper very well when first going to bed, but support may decrease throughout the night as the foams become softer.

Pocket sprung mattresses or hybrid mattresses generally offer better support than all-foam mattresses.

The Eve Premium Hybrid is a suitable alternative 👌

This mattress combines foams with pocket springs, so it's able to offer more support than an all-foam mattress.

Too firm for lighter-weight sleepers?

On the flip side, very light-weight sleepers may find the Nectar mattress a little too firm.

We also wouldn't recommend the Nectar for children 🧒

Lighter-weight sleepers may not be heavy enough to sink into the foams sufficiently.

This can result in that uncomfortable "sleeping on a table" sensation and result in back pains.

According to numerous customer reviews, though, a good mattress topper can easily fix this problem and offer a softer upper layer.

Mattress topper recommendations:

Good temperature regulation

Memory foam tends to retain more heat than other types of foam 🥵

Temperature regulation scale

But the top layer of smart memory foam in the Nectar mattress regulates body temperature much better than traditional memory foam.

It is also 30x more breathable.

Interestingly, the memory foam used in the Eve Original is also 30x more breathable than standard memory foam.

Combining this breathable memory foam with the adaptive cooling cover provides non-stop airflow and moves heat and moisture away from the body.

This provides for an overall cooler and more comfortable sleep.

We certainly didn't feel hot or sweaty during the night.

NECTAR + FREE GIFTS

Nectar mattress cover
The adaptive cooling cover allows for increased airflow

Not ideal for heavy sweaters

But:

We tested the mattress in winter, and we slept warmer than on a pocket sprung mattress.

If you feel hot more quickly or sweat a lot, then a pocket sprung mattress may be a better choice for you.

These are generally much cooler ❄️

A hybrid mattress, which combines foam with springs, is also a good choice.

Our favourite hybrid is the Simba mattress.

If you prefer all-foam mattresses, we'd suggest simply making use of Nectar's trial period to see if it's cool enough for you.

Luckily, Nectar gives you a full 365 days to try out the mattress!

NECTAR + FREE GIFTS

Low motion transfer

The Nectar memory foam mattress has low motion transfer, making it an excellent choice for couples.

Low motion transfer means that movement isn't carried through the mattress.

You're unlikely to feel your partner toss and turn at night or wake up if he or she comes to bed later than you.

We certainly didn't feel our partner come to bed after us.

Motion transfer
Sleeping is a breeze on a mattress with low motion transfer

But:

We occasionally felt our partner move on the mattress during the night, which wasn't the case with the Emma Original mattress.

The movements weren't severe enough to be uncomfortable, but we would still recommend that couples choose a larger mattress size for optimal comfort, especially considering the lower edge support.

Double mattresses are the standard, but we'd suggest that the king-size bed or larger would be even better 👩‍❤️‍👨

NECTAR + FREE GIFTS

Nectar mattress cover

The Nectar mattress features an elegantly designed cover in neutral colours.

  • A white quilted top cover (made of a Tencel cotton mix) with adaptive cooling that draws heat away from your body and allows for breathability and optimal airflow.
  • A grey meshed side cover that supports air circulation.
  • A non-slip positioning base layer that ensures your mattress remains firmly in place.

We loved the quilted top cover - it's incredibly soft, thick, and luxurious ✨

No side handles

Unfortunately, the Nectar mattress cover doesn't have any side handles 😔

This makes the mattress a little more challenging to move around.

We also struggled a bit while changing our sheets, as we couldn't sufficiently grab the mattress to lift it out of our bed frame.

A cover with side handles makes it easier to turn or carry the mattress, which is very convenient.

Most bed-in-a-box mattresses, like the Simba Hybrid or Eve Premium Hybrid, come with side handles.

Nectar memory foam mattress
The Nectar mattress doesn't have any side handles

Do not machine-wash the cover

While the mattress cover is removable, Nectar UK does not recommend machine-washing it 🧺

This is because it is made of Tencel fibres, which are exceptionally delicate and may be damaged while washing.

We took off the cover to look at the foams, but it was quite tricky to put it back on again.

So, we really wouldn't recommend removing the cover.

The mattress is hypoallergenic, though, and unlikely to cause an allergic reaction.

You can also spot-wash the cover if need be 🧼

Nectar Sleep recommends using a mattress protector to expand your mattress's lifespan and protect it from dirt, stains, and accidental spills.

The Nectar mattress protector fits perfectly. It's also reasonably priced 👇

Nectar mattress sizes

The Nectar Mattress UK is available in all the standard UK sizes 🇬🇧

These include:

  • Nectar mattress single: 90 x 190 cm (3’ x 6’3”)
  • Nectar mattress small double: 120 x 190 cm (4' x 6'3")
  • Nectar mattress double: 135 x 190 cm (4’6” x 6’3”)
  • Nectar mattress king size: 150 x 200 cm (5’ x 6’6”)
  • Nectar mattress super-king-size: 180 x 200 cm (6’ x 6’6”)

Couples should opt for the Nectar mattress double size or larger.

Nectar mattress depth

The Nectar mattress has a height of 25 cm (10 inches), which compares favourably to most mattresses.

Currently, Nectar Sleep only delivers within mainland UK 🇬🇧

The company doesn't deliver to some areas of Scotland, Northern Ireland, or offshore islands, including the Isle of Wright.

Nectar ships with BJS Home Delivery 🚛

Like other bed-in-a-box mattresses, the Nectar is delivered rolled up and compressed in a compact box.

Nectar usually offers a two-person delivery service at an additional cost, where your mattress is delivered directly to your room of choice, but this service has been currently suspended due to the Covid-19 pandemic 🦠

Couriers are now only able to deliver to the front door of your house or building.

How do you unpack the Nectar mattress?

Unpacking the Nectar mattress is easy:

  • Remove the rolled-up and vacuum-sealed mattress from the box.
  • Unfold it.
  • Cut open the plastic wrapping with the handy cutter provided in the box.

You may notice a slight odour when you first unwrap the mattress.

This is called off-gassing, a side effect of the production process, and is neither toxic nor harmful.

The smell will dissipate quickly, but we'd still recommend unpacking your new mattress in a well-ventilated room 🏡

Once you've removed the plastic wrapping, your mattress will slowly expand to its correct size.

Our mattress took about half an hour to inflate, but it can take up to 4 - 6 hours to expand fully.

Worn mattresses are recycled, but mattresses in good enough condition are donated to the British Heart Foundation.

Nectar mattress comparisons

If you're more familiar with a different mattress and would like to find out how the Nectar mattress compares, then you may find the following mattress comparisons helpful.

Which is better, the Nectar or the Emma mattress?

Both the Nectar mattress and the Emma Original mattress are high-quality memory foam mattresses.

In our experience, though, the Emma Original is quite a bit softer than the Nectar mattress.

This makes it more suitable for lighter-weight side sleepers and those who prefer a softer feel.

The Emma Original also has side carrying handles, which makes it more suitable for the elderly or those with a bad back who need assistance in turning the mattress.

READ EMMA ORIGINAL REVIEW

Emma Original

Which is better, the Nectar or the Simba mattress?

The Nectar mattress and the Simba Hybrid are two very different mattresses.

While the Nectar is an all-foam mattress, the Simba mattress combines quality foam with pocket springs.

This enhances its support and breathability.

We would recommend the Simba Hybrid to heavier sweaters and restless sleepers.

Should you buy the Nectar mattress?

The Nectar is one of the most comfortable mattresses we have ever slept on.

It's a high-quality, medium-firm mattress that offers exceptional comfort and support.

We can recommend the Nectar mattress as a best-buy option for:

  • Average-weight sleepers with any sleeping position preference
  • Heavier-weight side sleepers
  • Couples

We would not recommend the Nectar mattress for:

  • Heavier-weight back and stomach sleepers
  • Very light-weight sleepers or young children
  • The elderly or those with physical disabilities (even though the mattress isn't overly heavy, it doesn't have carrying handles and can be difficult to move)

But if you're not sure, there's no need to worry.

Nectar Sleep offers an unparalleled 365-day risk-free trial period, giving you plenty of time to try the mattress for yourself 🗓

But with a very low return rate - 3% vs the industry standard at well above 10% - you’re likely to fall in love with your Nectar mattress and enjoy the best night's sleep of your life, night after night.

To keep waste to a minimum, Nectar UK donates any old or returned mattresses to the British Heart Foundation.

If mattresses aren't in a good enough condition for donation, they're recycled instead.

Nectar relies on AnyJunk as its removal partner ♻️

AnyJunk ensures that 96% of items collected are recycled and don't end up in a landfill.

  • Nectar mattress lifetime guarantee

Nectar mattresses come with a "forever warranty", meaning that your product is guaranteed for as long as you own it

The company believes that more attention should be paid to long-term quality, and they have specifically designed the Nectar mattress to outlast heavy long-term use.

Nectar's "forever warranty" is a unique feature 🥰

Most industry-standard warranty periods run from 5 to 10 years.

Emma or Simba, both comparable mattress companies, for example, offer a 10-year guarantee.

Any damages from everyday use or impressions of 4 cm (1.5 inches) or more are covered.

Note, though, that the following are excluded:

    • Any mattress or mattress cover subject to misuse, neglect, accident or used in violation of instructions, including instructions to place the mattress on a proper bed frame.
    • A normal increase in softness of the pressure-relieving material, which does not affect the pressure-relieving qualities of the mattress.
    • Comfort preference.
    • Defects caused by physical abuse or damage to the structure and/or cover material, including, but not limited to, burns, cuts, tears, liquid damage, or stains.
    • Mattresses or mattress covers sold as reconditioned, used, returned, previously owned, or any other similar wording indicating that the mattress or mattress cover is not new or of first quality or has previously been purchased or used by another consumer.

To return your mattress, contact Nectar directly via telephone, e-mail, or chatbot to get the process started, and they'll replace your old mattress.

  • What bed frame should you choose for your Nectar mattress?

You can place your Nectar mattress on any bed frame, including platform beds, divans, and adjustable frames.

Nectar recommends that you do not put your mattress on the floor.

Pay attention to the distance between slats

We rarely recommend slatted bases for memory foam mattresses.

This is because slatted bases have gaps between the actual slats, and memory foam mattresses like the Nectar conform to this shape.

This leads to bumps and lumps in the long term.

But, you can use slatted bases if the slats aren't too far apart.

A maximum distance of 5 cm between slats is optimal.

    We wouldn't recommend deep frames

We'd also recommend not choosing a frame that's too deep.

Since the Nectar mattress doesn't have side handles, it's difficult to grip.

If your frame is too deep, it'll be even more difficult to grab hold of the mattress.

That's the reason we had difficulty changing the sheets.
