How we test products
Our mission is to take the guesswork out of finding the perfect sleep products.
We've dedicated hundreds of hours to testing mattresses and sleep accessories, and rely on a team of testers of differing weights, temperature preferences, and sleeping positions to evaluate each product.
Tested products are granted the Sleep Hero tested stamp of approval, a mark of our review's reliability.
If we haven't personally tested a product, please be assured that we invest significant time and energy into scouring the UK market and researching the best recommendations, and we work with a team of sleep experts who review our articles, ensuring that the insights we provide are not only relatable but also reliable.
Hypnia Essential Hybrid mattress composition
The Hypnia Essential Hybrid mattress is an apt name. 😁
This is because a hybrid mattress combines different layers to create an exceptional feeling of comfort.
But what are those layers?
The Hypnia Essential Hybrid mattress layers include:
- Pocket springs with 5 support zones
- Cloud-zoned foam layer
- Memory foam layer
- Air-wave fabric cover
It all sounds a bit technical, doesn’t it? 🤔
Don’t worry - we can break down the basics below.
Pocket springs with 5 support zones
Pocket-sprung mattresses have individual springs in separate pockets distributed across the mattress.
This allows them to work independently, providing the best level of support for the body. 💪
It also helps to absorb motion, meaning you shouldn’t feel your partner moving around at night.
Pocket springs have excellent breathability, as the gaps between the springs encourage airflow throughout the mattress, keeping you cool.
Similar to the pocket springs, the zoning foam layer encourages the body to stay aligned.
The foam adapts to the body, allowing the spine to remain neutral.
The Hypnia Hybrid contains 6 cm (2.36") of Cloud-zoned foam for support and pressure relief. 🥰
Memory foam layer
The mattress's top layer (so the bit you initially feel) is a memory foam layer.
The Hypnia Hybrid mattress contains 2 cm (0.78") of premium memory foam. ☁️
This provides a soft and snuggly feeling in the Hypnia memory foam mattress.
In addition, memory foam moulds around pressure points, reducing the feeling of aches in your hips and shoulders.
Hypnia Essential Hybrid mattress cover
All these advanced layers are wrapped in a highly breathable quilted cooling cover. ❄️
The cover is OEKO-TEX certified and hypoallergenic, so you don’t have to worry about any nasty chemicals. ✅
The mattress cover has handles underneath the mattress, which we almost overlooked.
Typically, mattresses have handles on the side, but we found the handles underneath made the mattress much easier to move.
Unfortunately, the cover is not removable or washable.
An advantage of a washable cover is that you can prevent dust mites and bacteria from building up inside the mattress. 🦠
This is particularly beneficial for those with allergies or who sweat often.
However, we recommend using a mattress protector, which will also help to prevent the build-up of dirt and bacteria.

Hypnia Essential Hybrid mattress firmness
So, how did the Hypnia Essential Hybrid mattress fare when put to the firmness test?
Firstly, it’s essential to understand why firmness is necessary.
A firm mattress helps to support the body and keep the spine lifted, preventing back pain.
However, a mattress that is too firm can cause discomfort to the joints.
Hypnia rate the Hypnia Essential Hybrid as a 6/10, “medium” level of support (a perfect level for side sleepers). ⚖️
Yet, for us, it felt more like a medium-firm mattress that was slightly more solid than our Simba Hybrid.
On our Sleep Hero firmness scale, where 1 is the softest and 10 is the firmest, we rated the Hypnia Hybrid mattress a 7/10.
This makes it:
- Firmer than: The Simba Hybrid and Emma Original mattress
- Softer than: The DreamCloud Luxury Hybrid and Simba Hybrid Luxe mattress
- Comparable to: The Nectar mattress and Eve Premium mattress
Measuring sinking depths
The Hypnia Hybrid mattress had a firm, cushiony feel even when concentrating our weight in a seated position.
You can see an example of this below:
Even in the middle of the Hypnia Hybrid mattress, we felt supported and didn't feel like we were sinking in or "stuck" in the mattress. ⚓
We tested the sinking levels of the Hypnia Essential Hybrid mattress even further with various sinking depth tests.
Here is an example:
The picture above shows how much the mattress sinks when we stand on the mattress and concentrate our weight on one specific area.
The sinking depth is about 17 cm (6.69 inches).
It sinks much more than the results of the Nectar Hybrid (11.5 cm / 4.5 inches) and the Simba Hybrid (13 cm / 5.11 inches).
We also measured the sinking depth when we lay in different positions on the mattress.
We tested the sinking depths for our average-weight and heavier sleep tester and measured the sinking depths of the pelvis and shoulders.
See our results below:
|Person A (9 st. / 126 lbs)||Person B (14.7 st. / 205 lbs)|
|Sleeping on the side:||
Shoulders: 4 cm (1.57")
Pelvis: 3 cm (1.18")
Shoulders: 6 cm (2.36")
Pelvis: 7 cm (2.7")
|Sleeping on the back:||
Shoulders: 2 cm (0.78")
Pelvis: 3 cm (1.18")
Shoulders: 4 cm (1.57")
Pelvis: 4 cm (1.57")
|Sleeping on the stomach:||
Shoulders: 1.5 cm (0.59")
Pelvis: 3 cm (1.18")
Shoulders: 3 cm (1.18")
Pelvis: 4 cm (1.57")
Our results show that the Hypnia Essential Hybrid sinks a suitable amount for both sleepers in the side sleeping position. 😄
It has moderate sinking for both sleepers in the back sleeping position, which is also ideal.
It has little sinking for the average-weight sleeper in the stomach sleeping position, which means the spine should stay lifted.
However, we concluded that it sank too much in the stomach sleeping position for the heavier-weight sleeper, making it unsuitable. 👎
Edge support refers to the stability and support on the perimeter of a mattress.
A mattress with good edge support will feel sturdy and secure when sitting or lying on the very edge.
This allows you to sit on the edge of the mattress easily without it sagging or feeling like you are plummeting into the base. 🤿
Edge support also helps prevent that “roll-off” feeling, where you feel like you are tipping out of the bed while sleeping.
Take a look at our results:
We concluded that the Hypnia Hybrid mattress had pretty good edge support overall. ✅
It didn’t sink too much, and we could sit comfortably on the edge when getting up in the morning or going to bed at night.
Is the Hypnia Essential Hybrid mattress suitable for couples?
The Hypnia Essential Hybrid mattress is a low-motion transfer mattress.
This means the mattress absorbs motion very well. 🚣♀️
So you shouldn’t feel:
- Your partner getting in and out of bed
- Your partner tossing and turning at night
The mattress should stay completely still, even if you’re the one fidgeting in the bed.
The Hypnia Hybrid mattress was excellent at absorbing any kind of motion.
We stayed entirely still throughout the night without disturbance (even when our cats were jumping on the bed). 🐈
When waking up at different times, our sleeping partner felt no movement on the other side of the mattress.
Therefore, we highly recommend the Hypnia Hybrid mattress to couples and restless sleepers.
How much do Hypnia mattresses cost?
The Hypnia Hybrid might be super comfortable - but is it affordable? 💰
It's priced slightly lower than other bed-in-a-box brands.
Yet, our testing experience proved it was just as comfortable as competing brands like the Simba Hybrid and Emma Premium.
Therefore, we'd definitely recommend the Hypnia Hybrid to those who want a mattress that offers the same comfort as these more well-known brands but for much better value.
The Hypnia Hybrid mattress includes a 15-year warranty, much longer than some competitors that come with just a 10-year guarantee.
With this in mind, we think the Hypnia mattress is a fair price, working out at just £45 per year.
But if the Hypnia mattress is still out of your budget, you can divide the cost with 0% credit options on the Hypnia website. 💳

Hypnia mattress delivery
The Hypnia Hybrid mattress comes with free delivery and returns. 🚚
After placing your order with Hypnia, it should arrive within 2 - 3 working days.
You will get a text the day before delivery giving you a 2-hour time slot for when you can expect your order.
Unfortunately, our Hypnia Hybrid mattress was delayed by around 11 days due to a stock-related issue.
Third-party couriers Arrow XL delivered our Hypnia Hybrid mattress to our room of choice.
We found the couriers were a bit impolite during our delivery. 😦
These mattresses were delivered quickly without delay, and the delivery team was much more friendly.
We've had little experience with Arrow XL in the past, but it wasn't an ideal first impression.
Fortunately, once we unpacked and tested our Hypnia Hybrid mattress, we had a much more positive experience.
Unpacking the Hypnia Hybrid mattress
Our Hypnia mattress was delivered in a box measuring up to 46 x 46 x 188 cm (18” x 18” x 74”).
However, this may vary depending on the size you order.
This is highly convenient, especially for those who live in flats or maisonettes.
It also means your Hypnia mattress will fit in narrow stairwells or loft bedrooms.
So, how do you unbox it? 👇
1. Remove it from the cardboard box
2. Unwrap the first layer of plastic
3. Unroll the mattress and lay it out flat
4. Carefully cut away the final layer of plastic
5. Your mattress will immediately begin expanding
6. Wait a few hours until it has fully expanded
It's hard to believe this full-size mattress came out of that tiny box - it’s like magic! ✨
After we unpacked our mattress, we noticed an unusual chemical smell.
This is known as off-gassing and isn’t dangerous.
In fact, customers will experience off-gassing with most memory foam mattresses.
We opened a few windows, and the smell disappeared within an hour. ♨️
The off-gassing was minimal compared to other mattresses, such as the Panda mattress, which took a few days until the smell completely disappeared.
We recommend unboxing your mattress in a well-ventilated room for the best results.
Hypnia Essential Hybrid mattress guarantee
The Hypnia Hybrid mattress comes with a 15-year guarantee. 🤞
This is much longer than standard guarantees, which are between 5 - 10 years.
In fact, that's an entire 5,475 nights to sleep on your Hypnia mattress.
The 15-year warranty protects you from manufacturing faults and dipping (of more than 10%) to give you peace of mind.
Some mattress brands have even longer guarantees.
Nectar and DreamCloud have an unmatched “Forever Warranty”, meaning their mattresses are guaranteed for a lifetime. 🤯
