A mattress protector is a type of mattress cover, a thin layer of bedding that sits on top of your mattress to protect it from dirt, stains, spills, and bacteria.
Generally, you'll find two types of mattress protectors:
- Five-sided protectors fit over your mattress like a fitted sheet. These are great to protect your mattress against spills and stains but not 100% efficient against bed bugs or dust mites.
- Encasement protectors cover the entire mattress and are the recommended choice if you're looking for protection against bed bugs and dust mites.
Waterproof mattress protectors
Most mattress protectors have a film of waterproof material, like polypropylene, that acts as a barrier to moisture.
We'd suggest opting for waterproof mattress protectors over water-resistant mattress protectors, as the former will act as a complete barrier and won't allow any moisture to seep through at all.
This is great for children as well as people who struggle with incontinence.
It also protects your mattress from any accidental spills, so you can enjoy your coffee in bed risk-free.
Waterproof mattress protectors also shield your mattress from sweat stains, which is great if you or your partner are heavy sweaters.
You may also wish to look for cooling mattress protectors, which have been specifically designed to help regulate temperature.
Anti-allergy mattress protectors
Mattress encasements are great for people prone to allergies, but standard waterproof mattress protectors will also help.
A mattress protector acts as a layer between you and your mattress, which protects you from dust mites.
Make sure that you opt for a hypoallergenic mattress protector that can be machine-washed at a high temperature.
This ensures easy care but is also better for people suffering from allergies 🤧
Quilted mattress protectors
If you're looking for a little extra comfort, you can also opt for a quilted mattress protector.
These are soft-touch protectors with hollow fibre or microfibre fillings to add a touch of comfort and luxury to your mattress.
What is the difference between a mattress protector and a mattress topper?
A mattress protector is not the same as a mattress topper.
Quilted mattress protectors can add a little more comfort but this is not their primary purpose - they're meant to be thin layers of bedding, like a fitted sheet, to safeguard your mattress against spills, stains, and dirt.
A mattress topper is much thicker, designed as extra padding to drastically change the feel of your mattress.
