If you're looking for a cheap mattress, you can't get any cheaper than one from the IKEA mattress selection.

One of IKEA's most popular mattresses is the IKEA Hövåg.

But is this mattress actually worth buying? 🤔

Or is it just a cheap product that will cause you uncomfortable nights?

We've tested the mattress and share all you need to know in this IKEA Hövåg mattress review.

  • Pocket springs allow for good elasticity.

  • The mattress is firm enough to support heavier-weight sleepers.

  • It has very good breathability.

  • Exceptionally low price.

  • 90-day trial period.

  • Made of low-quality materials.

  • The mattress cover is not removable or machine-washable.

  • The mattress isn't very comfortable & doesn't provide good pressure relief.

  • Delivery is not free.

  • The trial period is not risk-free as it only allows you to exchange a product.

  • Not comparable to other low-priced but higher-quality mattresses.

What makes the IKEA Hövåg special?

  • The mattress combines pocket springs with foams.

  • It is available in two different firmness levels, medium-firm and firm.

  • Like all IKEA mattresses, it is very affordable.

IKEA Hövåg mattress composition

The IKEA Hövåg is one of the most popular IKEA mattresses.

It is a pocket sprung mattress with foam padding.

It consists of two primary materials:

  • Pocket springs at the core of the mattress
  • Polyurethane foam that surrounds the core

The pocket sprung core provides much of the elasticity & support, while the foam layers provide some comfort.

Let's look at these layers in a bit more detail. 👇

IKEA Hövåg mattress layers

Pocket sprung layer

The core of the IKEA Hövåg consists of individually wrapped steel pocket springs. 🌀

Pocket springs act independently of each other and respond to your body as you move, giving support in all the right places.

Springs also allow for good air circulation, keeping you cooler and more comfortable.

Foam layers

The IKEA Hövåg spring core is surrounded by foams and polyester wadding as a soft filling.

The foam used is low-quality polyurethane foam (PUR foam), a firm and supportive foam usually reserved for the base of a mattress. 🧱

This foam provides stability and makes the mattress more durable, but it is also largely why the Hövåg mattress feels so firm.

Most high-quality mattresses use PUR foam at the base with other types of foam - like memory foam or latex foam - as the top comfort layer.

The foams used in the Hövåg are also low-density, only measuring 33 kg/m³.

This means that, despite the durability of polyurethane foam, your mattress won't last as long as other higher-density mattresses.

Who is the IKEA Hövåg pocket sprung mattress suitable for?

The IKEA Hövåg isn't the best mattress out there. 😟

But, it's not all bad:

  • The mattress has very good elasticity, so it'll be comfortable to move around on.
  • It has very good breathability, making it well-suited to people who sweat quite easily.
  • It's firm enough to support even heavier-weight sleepers.

If the above are relevant to you and you're looking for a mattress at an unbeatable price, you could try the IKEA Hövåg.

We explain this in more detail below. 👇

The IKEA Hövåg may be suitable for some people

How firm is the IKEA Hövåg mattress?

Conveniently, the IKEA Hövåg comes in two different firmness levels:

  • Medium-firm
  • Firm

These are better suited to different people and different sleep profiles.

Medium-firm IKEA Hövåg

The medium-firm version of the IKEA Hövåg is a tad more comfortable, especially for side sleepers. 👌

This is because side sleepers will sink into the foams a little deeper, which helps with optimal spinal alignment.

This is not the case with the firmer version of the mattress.

We've rated the medium-firm IKEA Hövåg at 5 out of 10 on the Sleep Hero firmness scale, where 1 is the softest and 10 is the firmest.

Firm IKEA Hövåg

The firmer version of the Hövåg is really firm. 😳

We've rated it at 8 out of 10 on the Sleep Hero firmness scale, where 1 is the softest and 10 is the firmest.

This firmness isn't ideal for most people:

  • Your body lies flat on the surface in most sleeping positions.
  • It leads to a build-up of pressure points, and isn't really comfortable in any position.

The mattress is unsuitable for side sleepers. 😏

Front sleepers and back sleepers should technically do better on firmer mattresses, though we still found the bed uncomfortable in these positions.

That said, this firm mattress can adequately support heavier-weight sleepers.

Can I make the firm mattress more comfortable?

If you've bought the firmer IKEA Hövåg and want to add a touch of comfort, you could try using a mattress topper.

A mattress topper is an additional layer of padding you place on top of a firmer mattress to add more softness and comfort.

Good mattress toppers can significantly change the way your mattress feels.

We'd recommend the ones below. 👍

Stay away from IKEA mattress toppers, though - these often don't offer enough softness!

Our favourite UK mattress toppers:

How comfortable is the IKEA Hövåg mattress?

The IKEA Hövåg is not a very comfortable mattress. 😩

Since the foams are of such low density, the mattress relies quite heavily on its pocket springs for comfort.

This isn't ideal, as pocket springs are much better at offering stability and pressure relief than overall comfort.

The foams are of low density

How comfortable is the firm version?

We wouldn't recommend the firmer KEA Hövåg to side or back sleepers.

  • The mattress doesn't offer enough sinkage to be comfortable for side sleepers.
  • The mattress doesn't offer enough pressure relief for back sleepers.

Front sleepers - and especially heavier-weight front sleepers - may find the KEA Hövåg quite comfortable.

Stomach sleepers generally require quite a firm sleeping surface to keep their body in line.

Firm surfaces also work great for heavier-weight sleepers that require much more support. 👍

We can't say that the KEA Hövåg is a great mattress by any means, but it may just do the trick if you need something incredibly firm.

Firmness according to sleeping position

How comfortable is the medium-firm version?

The medium-firm mattress rates slightly better, and it's far more comfortable for side sleepers.

The Which? Consumer Association has even given it a 70% rating, largely commending the mattress for its superior stability.

This mattress does indeed offer great stability & support. 🥳

But, even with the external ratings, we still don't think this mattress is as comfortable as a good mattress ought to be.

It may come in at an unbeatable price, but we'd rather spend a little more for a better quality product. 💰

    Our favourite UK mattress alternatives:

    IKEA Hövåg mattress cover

The IKEA Hövåg mattress cover looks quite elegant.

It features dark grey side panels and a white top panel, made from a cotton & polyester mix.

The cover also features convenient side handles, making carrying or moving the mattress much more manageable. 😁

Side handles make carrying the mattress much easier

Unfortunately, the cover is not removable or machine-washable.

IKEA recommend cleaning the mattress with furniture shampoo, which sounds very cumbersome. 🧴

Most high-quality mattresses come with removable mattress covers, but this isn't always the case.

Even the Simba Hybrid, one of our favourite mattresses, doesn't have a machine-washable cover. 🛀

    Machine-washable cover
Not all mattress covers are washable

This is why we'd highly recommend using a waterproof mattress protector.

Mattress protectors safeguard your mattress against stains, spills, dirt, moisture, and bacteria.

They can even help elongate the lifespan of your mattress.

    IKEA Hövåg mattress sizes

The IKEA Hövåg pocket spring mattress is available in a range of UK & EU mattress sizes. 🇬🇧🇪🇺

    These include:

    • IKEA Hövåg standard single mattress: 90 x 190 cm (3’ x 6’3")
    • IKEA Hövåg mattress 90 x 200 cm
    • IKEA Hövåg standard double size mattress: 135 x 190 cm (4’6" x 6’3")
    • IKEA Hövåg mattress 140 x 200 cm
    • IKEA Hövåg standard king-size mattress: 150 x 200 cm (5’ x 6’6")
    • IKEA Hövåg mattress 160 x 200 cm
    • IKEA Hövåg standard super-king mattress: 180 x 200 cm (6’ x 6’6")

Unfortunately, only the European sizes are available on Amazon.

    UK mattress sizes

How thick is the Ikea Hövåg mattress?

The Ikea Hövåg mattress has a depth of 24 cm (9.4 inches).

This is just under the industry standard of 25 cm (10 inches) but on par with the popular Eve mattresses.

It also means that all your standard bedding and fitted sheets will fit well.

We love the luxurious Panda bamboo bedding:

What does the IKEA Hövåg cost?

IKEA mattresses are among the most affordable mattresses in the UK. 🇬🇧

They're even cheaper than the budget-friendly Silentnight mattresses.

The IKEA Hövåg is available for under £300, though Amazon does charge more than the RRP for its European imports.

    IKEA delivery conditions

We bought our IKEA Hövåg mattress in-store.

Like standard bed-in-a-box mattresses, IKEA mattresses come rolled-up and wrapped in plastic, with convenient carrying handles.

This means buying a mattress in-store isn't impossible - but it can be impractical if you rely on public transport.

    Rolled-up mattresses

Luckily, you can also order online.

Unlike other mattress brands like Simba and Nectar, though, IKEA still charges for delivery. 🚛

Delivery fees vary according to the size of the parcel ordered.

Since mattresses are often quite large, you can expect to pay a bit more.

    • Selected Day Delivery (£40): Your item will be delivered to the room of your choice within 4 - 30 days.
    • Express Delivery (£50): Your item will be delivered to the room of your choice within 1 - 3 days.

Once unpacked, your IKEA Hövåg mattress will slowly expand to its original size.

IKEA recommends waiting 72 hours for full expansion. ⏰

Your brand new mattress may smell a bit when first unpacked.

This is called off-gassing, and it's completely normal.

We recommend unpacking your new mattress in a well-ventilated room 🏠

    Ordering via Amazon

While we expect IKEA delivery costs to be cut at some point, ordering through Amazon is a good alternative.

Amazon UK has tons of IKEA products, though most of the mattresses are European imports and a little more expensive than in-store.

With Amazon, numerous IKEA products are available with free delivery. 🥳

Products are generally dispatched within 10 days of purchase.

You'll also get faster delivery if you're an Amazon Prime member.

Does the IKEA Hövåg mattress come with a trial period?

Even though IKEA offers a standard 365-day returns period, this only applies to products that can be returned in a new & unused condition, with the original packaging.

IKEA mattresses only come with a "90-day love it or exchange it" returns policy.

This means you can test the mattress in the comfort of your own home, but if you don't like it, you won't be able to get a full refund.

We're not fans of this. 😔

Most of the mattress brands we recommend offer completely risk-free trial periods.

    For example:

    • Brook + Wilde offers a 100-day trial period.
    • Simba offers a 200-day trial.
    • Nectar even offers a revolutionary 365-day trial period!

These trial periods are great as they allow you to test the mattresses in the comfort of your own home AND get a full refund if you're not 100% satisfied.

    IKEA trial period

    IKEA return policy

If you're not happy with your IKEA mattress, you can return it - as long as it is not dirty, marked, or damaged. 📦

IKEA will offer you an exchange or a credit note.

You have to be prepared to spend the price of the mattress, even if you don't end up keeping it.

    • If you choose a more expensive mattress, you'll have to pay the difference.
    • If you choose a less expensive mattress, IKEA will give you a credit note on an IKEA refund card.

If you had your mattress delivered, the collection and delivery of the replacement mattress will be free of charge. 🚚

While we can appreciate the IKEA returns policy, we prefer mattress brands that offer completely risk-free trial periods.

Should you buy the IKEA Hövåg?

Overall, our experience with the IKEA Hövåg was average. 🤷‍♂️

We think the mattress is suitable for those looking for:

    • Great stability & support
    • Good elasticity and ease of movement
    • Great breathability

The firmer version, in particular, is well-suited to heavier-weight sleepers and front sleepers.

Both mattress versions could also work for short-term use or guest rooms.

But we really wouldn't recommend this mattress for long-term use - not if you want to invest in a quality product that will offer you a great night's sleep!

    Frequently asked questions:

    • Which bed frame can I use for the IKEA Hövåg mattress?

Since the IKEA Hövåg is such a firm mattress, it'll work well on any bed frame.

Box springs and slatted bases are the most popular.

You can read our guide on the best bed frames for more advice.

    • Does the IKEA Hövåg come with the standard 25-year guarantee?

IKEA offers an amazing 25-year limited warranty on all mattresses.

This is considerably longer than competitor brands, most of which only offer 5 or 10 years.

Only the DreamCloud Luxury Hybrid mattress and the Nectar memory foam mattress come with a longer lifetime guarantee.

Of course, we wouldn't recommend keeping a mattress for that long.

You should replace your mattress every 8 - 12 years.

IKEA mattresses are also lower quality products, so you may have to replace them every 5 or so years.

    • Can you tell me more about IKEA?

The Swedish furniture retailer surely needs no introduction.

Established in 1943 by billionaire business magnate Ingvar Kamprad, the idea behind the company was to offer a selection of furniture and household products suitable for the mass market at an affordable price.

Inspired by Scandinavian minimalism, IKEA attached great importance to attractive design

In the beginning, Kamprad only sold single products.

The first IKEA catalogue was published in 1952.

Today, IKEA is one of the world's leading furniture manufacturers with around 155,000 employees and an annual turnover of around £33 billion

The furniture giant can be found almost everywhere - IKEA has a total of 433 stores in 52 countries.

Of these, 50 are located in Germany, 9 in Switzerland, 7 in Austria, and 21 in the UK.

    • What are the other types of IKEA mattresses?

IKEA offers a wide range of mattresses, including:

      • IKEA Morgedal
      • IKEA Malfors
      • IKEA Moshult
      • IKEA Vatneström
      • IKEA Hokkåsen
      • IKEA Hyllestad
      • IKEA Hamarvik
      • IKEA Husvika
      • IKEA Hafslo
      • IKEA Vadsö
