Last updated: 31.10.2023 Reading time: 5 Min.

IKEA is so much more than an affordable furniture store.

Mattresses and bedding have long been part of this Swedish furniture giant’s range. 🇸🇪

We’re not big fans of the mattresses.

But do the mattress toppers fare better?

We put them to the test in this IKEA mattress topper review. 👇

IKEA mattress toppers

  • Relatively cheap.

  • Most covers are removable and machine-washable.

Disadvantages

  • Not very comfortable, especially when compared to higher quality mattress toppers.

  • No trial period.

  • Off-gassing when first unpacking is common.

The IKEA mattress topper range

IKEA has a wide range of mattress toppers in various firmness levels and materials.

These include IKEA polyurethane foam mattress toppers, IKEA memory foam mattress toppers, and IKEA latex mattress toppers with natural wool wadding.

Currently, only three of them are available in the United Kingdom. 🇬🇧

These include the:

  • Talgje, an IKEA foam mattress topper,
  • Tustna, an IKEA latex mattress topper with wool, and the
  • Tussöy, an IKEA memory foam topper.

The US & European ranges include a few more, such as the natural latex IKEA Tistedal, cold foam IKEA Tuddal, cooling memory foam IKEA Knapstad, and the IKEA Tananger mattress topper.

Unfortunately, in the UK, you cannot currently buy a cooling mattress topper from IKEA.

Do you need a mattress topper?

Mattress toppers serve multiple purposes:

  • They protect your actual mattress from dirt and bacteria.
  • They increase your sleeping comfort.

If you’re only looking to protect your mattress from stains, moisture, and bacteria, we’d recommend you purchase a mattress protector instead.

Mattress protectors are specifically designed to safeguard your mattress.

You can find several low-cost mattress protectors with IKEA.

Most of them, like the Panda mattress protector, are waterproof.

They’re often also much cheaper than mattress toppers. 💦

But if you’re looking to enhance comfort, you’ll undoubtedly want a mattress topper.

A mattress topper is a 4 - 10 cm thick removable layer of extra padding that you place on top of your mattress to change its overall feel.

Mattress toppers are mostly used to increase comfort and add a soft layer of cushioning.

This suggests that their primary purpose is to make a too-firm mattress a little softer. 🧱

So if you’ve invested in a new mattress that’s just a tad too firm, then, yes, a mattress topper is a good idea.

Mattress toppers are also often referred to as mattress pads. But not all mattress pads are mattress toppers.
Pads have multiple uses, including protecting your mattress against bedwetting. Most mattress toppers are not waterproof.

Can mattress toppers be used with any mattress?

As a standard, yes, mattress toppers can be used on any mattress, regardless of whether it’s a memory foam mattress, pillow top mattress, or a pocket sprung mattress.

Remember, though, that mattress toppers give you a better night’s sleep by making your mattress softer. 😴

It’s a good idea to pair them with firmer mattresses, like spring mattresses or hybrid mattresses, for the best effect.

One of our favourite hybrid mattresses is the Simba Hybrid.

Spring mattresses tend to be firmer

A mattress topper, unfortunately, cannot make a soft mattress firmer.

If your old mattress is worn or sagging - or if you’ve purchased one that’s just not right for you - then you’ll have to look for a new mattress.

How do you attach an IKEA mattress topper?

Many mattress toppers come with straps or elasticated bands that make them fit like a sheet.

IKEA mattress toppers do not have straps.

You can simply place the pad on top of your mattress - but, this is super inconvenient.

We've found mattress toppers without straps to be very uncomfortable as they simply don't stay put on the mattress.

This is even worse if you're a restless sleeper. 😩

If you already have a strapless topper and don't want to buy a new one, we'd suggest using a fitted sheet or mattress protector over it to keep it in place as best as possible.

How good are IKEA mattress toppers?

All IKEA mattress toppers serve the purpose of making a firm mattress more comfortable.

But, they are still made from discount materials and cannot compare to higher-quality mattress toppers.

Like IKEA mattresses, customers often lament the fact that IKEA mattress toppers are very firm, despite being available in a variety of firmness levels ranging from soft to medium-firm to firm.

This often has a negative effect on comfort and back pain relief.

Though, this firmness may not be a bad thing if you are looking for the best IKEA mattress topper to make your mattress feel a little firmer.

Some customers find that the IKEA mattress toppers alleviate minor back pains and discomforts.

But many others have complained that the IKEA mattress toppers don’t have any pressure-relieving properties and actually worsen back pain. 😩

This is primarily because of their firmness.

Higher quality toppers, like the Simba topper, aim to relieve back pain.

Firmness and comfort

Buying an IKEA mattress topper could be a 50/50.

It may solve your problems, but it might not. 🤷‍♂️

Low-quality toppers may even make your back pain worse!

This is why we’d recommend opting for a higher-quality mattress topper instead.

We highlight a few of our favourite UK mattress topper alternatives below.

Our favourite mattress toppers:

IKEA mattress topper prices

Of course, the one thing that IKEA has going for it is the prices. 😇

IKEA mattress toppers are notably cheaper than our other favourite mattress toppers.

They will set you back an average of £100 for a double-size topper.

Other favourites, like the Simba mattress topper, will cost closer to £250 - £300 for a double size.

But, ultimately, you get what you pay for. 💷

A mattress topper from IKEA simply cannot compare to the higher-quality options available in the UK.

Our favourite budget-friendly mattress topper is the Panda memory foam bamboo mattress topper. 🥳

The Panda mattress topper costs an average of £125 for a double size, much cheaper than some other brands.

But, it still promises superior quality and comfort.

Of course, you can purchase the IKEA Tussöy mattress topper on Amazon with free delivery, but it’ll only be available in European sizes.

Rolled up ikea mattress toppers

Delivery charges vary, but you’re looking at between £4 and £50 for at-home delivery, depending on the size of your package.

Should you buy an IKEA mattress topper?

IKEA mattress toppers can add some extra comfort to a too-firm mattress, but we don't think they’re a good buy.

We’d much rather recommend investing in a higher-quality mattress topper to guarantee you extra comfort.

The Panda bamboo memory foam topper is our favourite value-for-money choice.

Frequently asked questions

  • Do IKEA mattress toppers come with a guarantee period?

IKEA mattresses come with a 25-year limited warranty, but there is no guarantee on IKEA mattress pads and toppers.

  • What other bedding accessories does IKEA offer?

IKEA offers a wide range of bedding and sleep accessories, including pillows, mattress protectors, sheets, duvets, bed frames and slats, sofa beds, and bedroom furniture.

  • Can IKEA mattress toppers help with a bad back?

To put it bluntly - no.

We didn't think the mattress toppers from IKEA were comfortable at all.

Low-quality toppers may help with back pain, but they also might not.

And they can even make the situation worse!

We'd recommend opting for one of the other higher-quality mattress toppers, like the Simba Hybrid topper, instead.

  • Can a mattress topper make a mattress firmer?

Generally, mattress toppers aren't thick enough to totally transform a soft mattress into a firm one.

However, they can add some firmness and support.

The IKEA Tussöy mattress topper is the closest you'll get to an extra-firm mattress topper at IKEA.

As a memory foam topper, it reacts to body heat.

Therefore, the warmer you are, the softer your mattress (and topper) will feel.

If you want an even firmer mattress topper (that won't turn soft when hot), we suggest checking out the Simba mattress topper.

It is a firm and cooling mattress topper.

Warm sleepers, those who feel their mattress is too soft, and those who prefer sleeping on their stomach will love the Simba mattress topper.
