Our recommended UK mattress alternatives

Emma Sleep no longer sells the Emma One in the UK.

While you can still buy the Emma One on Amazon, we'd highly recommend choosing your new mattress from our best mattress recommendations instead.

We have chosen a few recommendations that are most similar in style and feel to the Emma One foam mattress.

Best Emma One mattress alternatives:

How does the Emma One compare to the other Emma mattresses?

Even though the Emma One is no longer officially sold in the UK, you will still find a few fantastic Emma mattresses.

Here's a quick overview of popular Emma choices, as compared to the Emma One found on Amazon:

Keep in mind that while similar to the Emma One from Emma UK, the Emma One from Amazon is slimmer, measuring just 18 cm (7 inches) instead of 25 cm (9.8 inches).

Composition-wise, the Emma Original is the most similar to the Emma One.

Both the Amazon Emma One and Emma Original are all-foam mattresses, which fall on the softer side of our firmness scale.

The Emma One foam mattress we originally tried was a firmer Emma model than the current Amazon Emma One.

If you're looking for a slightly firmer mattress that better matches the original Emma One from Emma UK, the Nectar memory foam mattress would be an excellent choice.

Top alternative to the Emma One:

Emma One mattress composition

The Emma One is a foam mattress consisting of three individual layers.

These are:

  • A comfort layer of breathable Airgocell foam.
  • 7 zones pressure-relieving and cushioning viscoelastic memory foam.
  • Supportive HRX cold foam.

Each of the materials used serves a unique purpose.

Let's take a closer look at these layers.

Emma One mattress foam layers

The three layers of the Emma One foam mattress work together optimally to provide comfort and support.

1. Airgocell foam layer

Emma Sleep's unique Airgocell technology is responsible for two key features:

  • It provides superior temperature regulation by allowing excess heat to escape.
  • It offers excellent point elasticity, allowing one area to be compressed without affecting the rest of the mattress.

This layer counteracts the heat retention properties of memory foam and enhances orthopaedic and motion isolation features. 👩‍❤️‍👨

2. Memory foam layer

You'll find very high-quality and high-density memory foam in all of the Emma mattresses.

Memory foam offers body-contouring support for targeted spinal alignment and enhanced pressure relief.

But its excellent pressure-relieving feel isn't the only reason you may want to get a memory foam mattress like the Emma One. 👇

benefits of memory foam
The Emma One has all the standard benefits of memory foam.

Memory foam mattresses are an excellent choice for anyone looking for orthopaedic support.

3. HRX foam base layer

The majority of the Emma One mattress is made up of a third layer of firmer HRX cold foam.

This provides support and stability for your entire body and ensures the mattress's durability.

The Emma One mattress features contour zones, allowing for more sinkage in some areas and less in others.

This allows the mattress to adapt to your body more optimally and ensures proper spinal alignment.

The Emma One mattress has quite noticeable ventilation channels.

The Emma One mattress base also features very distinct ventilation channels.

These allow for better air circulation, keeping you cooler and more comfortable throughout the night. ❄️

It also prevents the build-up of mites and bacteria, which prefer warmer and more humid environments.

How firm is the Emma One mattress?

The Amazon Emma One is described as a medium-feel mattress.

However, we would suggest it's actually more of a soft-medium mattress since many Amazon Emma One reviews state it felt softer than they expected. 🐑

The Emma One that was initially sold on Emma Sleep UK felt significantly firmer.

In fact, our testers measured it as an 8 out of 10 on the Sleep Hero firmness scale, where 1 is the softest and 10 is the firmest.

Emma One sinkage
The original Emma One was a much firmer mattress than the Emma One currently sold on Amazon.

If you are searching for a firmer memory foam mattress, like the original UK Emma One, we'd suggest checking out the Nectar Memory Foam mattress. 🤗

We found it to be a comfortable, 7 out of 10, medium-firm feel.

How comfortable is the Emma One?

When our team tried the original UK Emma One, we found it extremely comfortable, thick, and fairly firm.

While the Emma One sold on Amazon has a similar all-foam composition, it is significantly softer and thinner, so we wouldn't recommend it for long-term use.

Despite these differences, most people still find the Amazon version just as comfortable as we found our Emma One. 😍

Customers generally comment on the body-hugging feel and praise that it doesn't sleep too hot.

However, this is not always the case, and those who prefer a firmer feel, particularly heavier individuals, will likely find the Amazon version of the Emma One too soft and thin.

Does the Emma One sleep hot?

Memory foam mattresses usually sleep a little warmer than other types of mattresses. 🔥

This is because memory foam retains more heat, which will keep you warmer and more snug throughout the night.

Temperature regulation scale
On a temperature regulation scale, memory foam sleeps warmest.

For hot sleepers, this could be problematic.

However, the Emma One counteracts these heat retention properties by introducing a few key features.

These include:

  • The Airgocell foam allows for better temperature regulation.
  • The ventilation channels ensure good air circulation, carrying away excess heat.
  • The top cover is very breathable, allowing heat and moisture to escape.

This creates an environment that's more conducive to a comfortable and temperature-regulated sleep overall. ❄️

ventilation channels in emma one mattress
The ventilation channels allow for enhanced air circulation and temperature regulation.

That said, if you're a very hot sleeper or heavy sweater, we'd recommend you steer clear of memory foam mattresses.

Hot sleepers fare much better on pocket-sprung or hybrid mattresses.

Spring-based mattresses allow for better air circulation and retain less heat. 🌀

Take a look at some of our recommended cooling mattresses below.

Our favourite mattresses for hot sleepers:

Is the Emma One mattress suitable for couples?

The Emma One is a fantastic mattress for couples. 👩‍❤️‍👨

This is due to the following:

  • Both lighter-weight and average-weight people find the mattress comfortable, which is great for two people sharing.
  • Memory foam limits motion transfer, meaning you won't feel your partner move at night.
  • The top layer of Airgocell foam adds a buffer to make the mattress easier to move on, which is not always the case with memory foam mattresses.

We would recommend that couples opt for larger mattress sizes to make their sleeping experience more comfortable.

Motion isolation
If your mattress has good motion isolation, you can sleep snuggly no matter what.

While a double mattress is a minimum, we'd highly recommend couples opt for king-size or super-king-size mattresses. 👑

These ensure you'll have plenty of room to move on and can enjoy a more comfortable sleep.

Luckily, even the Emma One sold on Amazon is available in a range of sizes, from single mattress to super-king:

£ 199.90
Small Double
£ 279.90
£ 299.90
£ 353
Super King
£ 447

Emma One mattress cover

Like most Emma mattresses, the Emma One features a removable mattress cover.

The moisture-wicking cover has been uniquely designed to be breathable, regulate humidity, and enhance air circulation.

Conveniently, the Emma One mattress cover also features 4 robust side handles that make transporting or turning your mattress easier.

Emma One side handles
The Emma One has side handles for easy movement.

The Emma One mattress cover is also fully removable and can be machine-washed at 40°C. 🛀

This makes it an excellent choice for people prone to allergies - and for general hygiene.

However, the mattress cover is not waterproof, so your mattress foams may stain through sweating or accidental spilling if you don't take measures to safeguard your mattress further.

We always recommend purchasing a waterproof mattress protector, even if your mattress cover is removable.

These affordable accessories can help you avoid stains and extend your mattress's lifespan. ⏳

Where can you buy the Emma One mattress?

Emma Sleep no longer officially sells the Emma One foam mattress in the UK.

However, you can find a softer, lower-height version (measuring 18 cm / 7 inches) on Amazon in the UK.

Emma One on Amazon

The soft-medium Emma One is available on Amazon at fantastic prices!

Conveniently, the Emma One purchased via Amazon comes with a 200-day trial period and a 10-year guarantee.

So you can still get a great deal on this Emma mattress and the additional benefits of buying Emma, even though the mattress is no longer sold through Emma UK.

However, it should be pointed out that the promised Emma trial and guarantee could be disappointing.

On analysing Amazon reviews, we found some customers had challenges utilising the trial or guarantee and found themselves caught between Amazon and Emma customer services. 😣

Additionally, while most people found the mattress comfortable, we'd still recommend a standard-height mattress (24 cm / 9.4 inches) or higher for regular use.

Emma label close-up
While you could previously buy the Emma One from Emma Ireland, it is now only available on Amazon.

We suggest buying directly from brands instead of going through retailers like Amazon.

Cutting out the middleman tends to make it easier to get in touch with manufacturers and resolve issues. 👍

If you are looking for a good alternative and want to buy direct from a brand, we suggest checking out the all-foam Emma Original or Nectar Memory Foam mattress.

The Emma Original is most similar to the current softer Emma One, which is currently sold on Amazon, while the Nectar Memory Foam mattress is more similar to the firmer Emma One from the Emma UK website.

What other Emma products can you buy?

In addition to a range of high-quality mattresses, Emma Sleep sells a range of accessories via its official website.

These range from pillows to duvets, bed frames, mattress toppers, and more.

While you may find some of these through other retailers, we'd highly recommend purchasing directly from Emma Sleep.

We've included a quick overview of some of our favourites below.

Emma One delivery conditions

The Emma One can no longer be ordered directly from Emma Sleep, but you can find it on Amazon.

So, what can you expect from Amazon's Emma One delivery services?

Amazon delivery includes:

  • Free delivery to your front door.
  • Bed-in-a-box design that allows the mattress to be carried more easily.
  • A trial period that begins with delivery.

Bed-in-a-box mattresses are very convenient since they allow you to accept a larger mattress delivery and still be able to handle it by yourself. 📦

Emma One mattress delivered in a compact box
The Emma One mattress is delivered rolled up in a compact box.

All you need to do is unpack the mattress, remove the vacuum seal, and watch your mattress expand.

Off-gassing is very likely with compressed mattresses, but this is simply a side effect of the production process and isn't harmful or toxic.

Most off-gassing usually disappears within a few hours - or a few days at most.

off-gassing with mattress
Off-gassing is likely with compressed mattresses, but the chemical smell usually disappears quite quickly.

Like other Emma mattresses, the Emma One also features a risk-free trial period and a 10-year guarantee, allowing you to test the mattress in the comfort of your home.

The warranty covers manufacturing, material, or durability faults.

However, some customers found it challenging to return their Amazon Emma One under these promised trials and guarantees.

Is the Emma One a good mattress?

The Emma One is a high-quality mattress that offers exceptional comfort and support.

If you're still sleeping on one, you're in luck! 🍀

And if you can get your hands on one, we'd recommend it to anyone looking for an affordable, comfortable, and softer sleep.

Frequently asked questions

  • Why was the Emma One mattress discontinued?

Emma Sleep changes its product range quite frequently.

The UK's products also differ from those in other countries.

Over the last few years, we've seen the Emma One, Emma Premium, Emma Hybrid, and Emma Cot discontinued.

However, the Emma Hybrid came back again and the Emma Premium was replaced by the Emma NextGen Premium.

The one stable has been the Emma Original, though even this one isn't available in many other countries anymore.

  • I bought an Emma One before it was discontinued. Has my guarantee expired?

If you bought an Emma One mattress from Emma Sleep before the mattress was discontinued in the UK, there's no need to fear.

Your 10-year warranty will still be valid.

To contact Emma Sleep about warranty concerns, please e-mail them at, visit their live online chat, or complete their online contact form

  • I found the Emma One on Amazon. Is this the right mattress?

While Emma Sleep no longer officially sells the Emma One mattress in the UK, we have found a version of this mattress on Amazon.

It appears to be the same mattress, featuring three layers of hypersoft foam, viscoelastic foam, and conventional foam.

The mattress also comes with a 200-day trial period and a 10-year guarantee.

But, the Emma One mattress sold on Amazon is a low-height version, measuring only 18 cm (7 inches).

The original Emma One mattress had a height of 25 cm (9.8 inches).

While you're still bound to have a good night's sleep, we'd highly recommend standard-height mattresses over low-height versions.

These tend to offer greater stability and durability.

  • Can you tell me more about Emma Sleep?

Emma Sleep is a leading bed-in-a-box mattress manufacturer that was first established in Germany in 2015.

The company's founder, Max Laarmann, initially wanted to produce a reasonably priced mattress that was available online and came with a risk-free trial period.

Today, the Emma product range has expanded beyond mattresses, and the company operates all over Europe, the UK, the USA, Australia, and more.
