Head straight to our favourite UK equivalents below:

Who is Purple?

The Purple mattress brand is a US company with over 30 years of experience. ⏲️

They are most well known for their Purple Grid mattresses, an advanced bed-in-a-box mattress that features a purple Grid layer.

But what is the Purple Grid, and why is it so popular? 👇

Purple mattress composition

Purple mattresses have a dynamic structure to provide the best support and comfort for your sleep.

This includes:

  1. 🟣 GelFlex Purple Grid
  2. 🟣 Comfort Core polyfoam layer
  3. 🟣SoftFlex breathable cover

Other more premium Purple mattresses have additional comfort layers, including pocket springs.

All Purple mattresses feature the Purple Grid.

Yet, one thing they all have in common is that they include the popular Purple Grid.

What is the Purple Grid?

The Purple grid is a unique mattress material made from hyper-elastic polymer and shaped like a grid. 🟪

The Purple Grid responds to body weight and softens when pressure is applied. ☁️

See how it works below!

The flexible grid structure makes this a highly versatile mattress that relieves pressure on the body and adapts to your shape.

The large gaps between the grids also encourage optimal ventilation.

The “Purple squishy” is available for purchase for those who want to feel the Purple Grid before buying. 🤩

the purple grid

It can be used as a stress-reliever, or even as a bed for your phone (what will they come up with next?!) 🤯

But it’s a great way to test out the Purple material before you risk the expense of a new mattress.

Are Purple mattresses comfortable?

What you really want to know is whether this advanced mattress technology is comfortable. 🤔

We’ll break down everything you need to know to determine if a Purple mattress is the best option for a better night’s sleep.

Sleeping position

Purple mattresses are best for average weight back sleepers.

These medium-firm mattresses provide support and comfort for a balanced sleep. ⚖️

If you experience back pain during sleep, this is an indication you have the wrong type of mattress for your sleeping position.

Our firmness scale can advise you on the type of mattress you need.

Firmness scale graphic
The firmness scale can guide you on the correct firmness.

Like foam mattresses, the Purple Grid top layer allows the hips to sink into the mattress to relieve pressure points whilst keeping the spine aligned. 🤗

The Purple mattress is also suitable for most side sleepers as the Purple Grid absorbs the weight of the hips and shoulders.

Optimal spinal alignment purple mattress
The Purple Grid relieves pressure on the body.

However, lighter-weight side sleepers might prefer a slightly softer mattress.

However, we wouldn’t recommend a Purple mattress for stomach sleepers. 👎

Stomach sleepers require a firmer mattress that keeps the spine and neck neutrally aligned.

Instead, a firmer mattress such as the DreamCloud Luxury Hybrid would be more suitable.

One of the coolest aspects of the Purple Grid mattress is that it’s highly breathable. ❄️

The grid construction of the polymer material means that it has air channels throughout, encouraging airflow, similar to an innerspring mattress.

pocket spring mattress circulation
The Purple mattress has optimal airflow.

This temperature-neutral mattress encourages hot air to flow through the mattress and back out again, preventing heat build-up. 🌬️

You should use your Purple mattress on a slatted frame for best results.

The gaps between the slats will ensure warm air can escape out the bottom of the mattress.

Motion transfer

Motion transfer refers to how much a mattress isolates movement. ⛵

In other words, can you feel your partner moving around next to you whilst you sleep?

A low motion transfer will keep you still all night for an undisturbed night’s sleep.

Low motion transfer benefits
A low motion transfer mattress is an excellent choice for couples and restless sleepers.

The purple mattress absorbs motion fairly well compared with traditional coil-sprung mattresses.

However, some other brands have even better motion isolation.

If your partner moves around a lot during the night, or you’re a restless sleeper, a low motion transfer mattress should be a priority. ✅

Edge support

Additionally, Purple beds haven’t got the best edge support compared to other UK brands. ☹️

This is an important feature for those that regularly sit on the end of their bed.

People sitting on edge of bed
Edge support can be a dealbreaker for some people.

A mattress with the best support will provide low motion transfer and support you right up to the edge of the mattress.

Purple mattress collection

The Purple brand started with one mattress, but now you have a variety of Purple mattresses available to choose from. 💜

This includes:

  • Purple mattress
  • Purple Plus mattress
  • Purple Hybrid mattress
  • Purple Hybrid Premier 3 mattress
  • Purple Hybrid Premier 4 mattress

There is also a selection of kid's mattresses so that the whole family can join the Purple club. 👪

The Purple mattress is an entry-level all-foam mattress, with the Purple Hybrid Premier 4 being the most high-end option.

The Purple mattress and Purple Plus contain the grid combined with foam layers.

The Purple Hybrid and Purple Hybrid Premier 3 and 4 have pocketed coils for even more support and breathability. 🌬️

What sizes do Purple mattresses come in?

As a US brand, purple mattresses are available in US standard sizes.

This includes:

  • Purple mattress twin size mattress - 96.5 X 190.5cm (38" X 75")
  • Purple mattress twin XL size mattress - 96.5 X 203.2cm (38" X 80")
  • Purple mattress full size mattress - 137.2 X 190.5cm (54" X 75")
  • Purple mattress queen size mattress - 152.4 X 203.2cm (60" X 80")
  • Purple mattress king size mattress - 193 X 203.2cm (76" X 80")
  • Purple mattress California king size mattress - 182.9 X 213.4cm (72" X 84")

If you have a UK bed frame, these mattress sizes won’t be appropriate for your bed.

Instead, you should consider a mattress that comes in standard UK sizes.

UK mattress sizes

How much do Purple mattresses weigh?

Purple mattresses weigh between 30 - 64 kgs (70 - 140 lbs), depending on your size.

This is pretty standard, with the average mattresses weighing 17 - 70 kgs (37 - 154 lbs).

Unfortunately, purple mattresses don’t come with handles, making them more awkward to move.

If you need to move your mattress often or turn it regularly, we recommend a mattress with handles, such as the below mattresses:

Are Purple mattresses worth it?

Purple mattresses are a popular brand in the US that we hope to see in the UK very soon. 🤞

The unique grid structure in Purple mattresses stands them out from many current UK competitors.

However, other UK brands can provide similar pressure relief and comfort to the Purple brand with even better guarantees. 💜

We’re sure you’ll find some of these brands to be a fantastic alternative to Purple mattresses.

Frequently asked questions:

  • Do purple mattresses have fiberglass?

Purple mattresses do not contain fiberglass

In fact, these mattresses have been tested against toxins and harmful chemicals with CertiPUR US-certified foam.

The unique Purple Grid is made from elastic polymer, whilst other layers include viscose polyurethane foam and pocket springs

  • How do purple mattresses arrive?

Purple mattresses are a bed-in-a-box brand.

This means they are compressed before delivery and rolled up so they can be packed away in an easy-to-move compact box.

Some of the UK’s most popular bed brands are bed-in-a-box mattresses.

When your Purple mattress arrives, you should carefully unpack it, remove the plastic, and watch it expand!

Most bed-in-a-box brands will take a few hours to expand fully.

They are amongst some of the most eco-friendly mattress materials as they are sustainably sourced and 100% recyclable.

They have a similar feel to memory foam as they mould around the body and relieve pressure.

However, they’re a better choice in terms of breathability as they have pinholes that encourage natural ventilation.

Latex mattresses also have the best durability compared to other materials and have a life expectancy of up to 15 years.

  • Can I buy a Purple mattress in the UK?
