Emma Hybrid composition

The Emma Hybrid is a high-quality hybrid mattress that combines the best qualities of memory foam and pocket sprung mattresses to create a breathable, supportive, and comfortable sleeping surface.

The Emma Hybrid mattress features four different layers, in addition to a fully removable and washable top cover.

The four layers are:

  • Patented Airgocell foam
  • Supportive mini pocket springs
  • Viscoelastic memory foam
  • Supportive HRX foam

Emma Hybrid mattress layers

1. A top layer of patented Airgocell foam (4 cm)

This open-pored and breathable foam layer provides comfort and limits motion transfer.

2. Supportive pocket springs (2 cm)

An average of 200 individually wrapped pocket springs placed deep between two layers of foam provide support.

3. Viscoelastic memory foam (3 cm)

This pressure-relieving memory foam layer adapts perfectly to your shape for that body-hugging comfort.

4. A base layer of supportive HRX foam (16 cm)

This zoned cold foam base layer adds overall stability and support to the mattress and enhances the mattress's ability to keep your body perfectly aligned for that orthopaedic feel.

How thick is the Emma Hybrid mattress?

The Emma Hybrid is 25 cm (10") thick, though slight variations may occur.

The mattress can carry an average weight of 130 kg per person.

Why choose a hybrid mattress?

Hybrid mattresses combine the features of a foam mattress with the features of a spring mattress, and the materials work together optimally.

The foam layers allow the mattress to compress, aiding comfort, while the springs offer stability, support, and pressure relief.

Both materials used in the Emma Hybrid are of high quality, ensuring the durability and long lifespan of the mattress.

    Emma Hybrid mattress cover

The Emma Hybrid mattress is encased in a stylish grey-and-white cover, made predominantly of polyester.

The mattress cover is completely removable and machine-washable at 60 degrees.

This is great for hygiene purposes and also makes the mattress a hypoallergenic choice suitable for people prone to allergies.

    Temperature-regulating fibres

Both the top and bottom covers of the mattress are equipped with temperature-regulating fibres and 3D-mesh to help wick away moisture.

This keeps the cover and the mattress as a whole more breathable.

Greater air circulation and breathability also ensure that your mattress will remain more temperature-neutral for a more comfortable sleep.

This is especially important in memory foam mattresses, as memory foam tends to retain more heat.

The bottom cover also contains a non-slip base, which allows your mattress to sit firmly on your bed frame.

    Side handles for easy transportation

Conveniently, the Emma Hybrid mattress cover also has side handles.

This makes transporting the mattress much easier.

You don't need to flip your mattress, but turning it regularly is recommended.

The Emma Hybrid is also a relatively low-weight mattress, coming in at only 25 kg for a 135 x 190 cm double mattress.

    Replacement mattress covers

Did you know that you can also purchase a replacement mattress cover from Emma UK?

This is great if your original cover should ever get damaged.

That said, we'd always recommend adding a waterproof mattress protector to further safeguard your mattress from any spills, damage, and stains.

    Emma Hybrid mattress firmness

The Emma Hybrid is described as a medium-firm mattress but it definitely falls on the firmer end of the scale.

We'd rate it as 7 out of 10 on the Sleep Hero firmness scale, with 1 being the softest and 10 the firmest.

This is much firmer than the Emma Original mattress, which we've rated as 4 out of 10.

    Emma Hybrid firmness level

Does the Emma Hybrid mattress offer enough support?

As we've found in our Emma Hybrid mattress review, this mattress is indeed very supportive, especially if you're of average weight.

With its unique combination of materials and the zones base layer, the Emma Hybrid manages to offer great support while keeping your spine in a healthy alignment.

This is achieved by offering more support for the lighter parts of your body, like your feet and head, while allowing the heavier parts of your body, like your shoulders and pelvis, to sink in more deeply.

The result? A perfectly aligned spine.

This makes it a great choice for anyone suffering from upper or lower back pain.

We've found that the Emma Hybrid mattress offers this level of support if you sleep on your side or if you're shorter or lighter and sleep on your back.

If you're larger than average and a back sleeper, though, the mattress does not give you the support you'll need.

You may wish to try the Nectar mattress or the Otty Hybrid mattress, which are similar in terms of firmness level but may work better for your body.

That said, we highly recommend making use of the risk-free trial period.

Emma UK gives you 200 nights to try the mattress. If you find that it's not supportive enough for you, you can simply send it back for a full refund.

    Good edge support

The Emma Hybrid offers great edge support if you're sleeping on the mattress, meaning you can make use of the entire width of the mattress.

That said, edge support is a little lacking if you're sitting on the edge of the mattress.

    Add more softness or firmness

The Emma mattress may only be available at one level of firmness but the company is there to help you achieve maximum comfort.

Emma UK offers you one free layer to help soften or firm up the mattress if you find that it isn't quite working for you.

All you need to do is contact Emma's senior support team at

    Emma Hybrid mattress review

    Emma Hybrid mattress review box

How comfortable is the Emma Hybrid?

Even though the Emma Hybrid is a firmer mattress with good support, it still offers maximum comfort.

This is largely because the two upper comfort layers of Airgocell and memory foam give the Emma Hybrid mattress a soft and pleasant feeling.

Memory foam in general is known for its high degree of comfort.

It adapts perfectly to the contours of your body, supporting you where needed, allowing your muscles to relax sufficiently, and relieving any pressure points.

Memory foam can sometimes be a little difficult to move in due to that characteristic memory imprint, where the foam keeps the shape of your imprint for a little longer.

But, this is not the case with the Emma Hybrid.

Indeed, the Emma Hybrid mattress is very comfortable to turn around on.

Overall, the mattress is incredibly comfortable.

    Good temperature regulation

The combination of materials in the Emma Hybrid allows for great breathability.

Generally, memory foam mattresses offer a warmer sleep as memory foam retains more heat.

But the patented Airgocell foam layer and the pocket springs counteract this, allowing for greater air circulation and preventing heat from being trapped in the mattress.

The space between the pocket springs in the core of the mattress is especially important in creating greater airflow.

This unique combination of foam and pocket springs, in combination with the 3D-mesh of the mattress cover, ensures that the Emma Hybrid provides an overall cooler sleep.

This is great news for people who prefer a more temperature-neutral sleep.

That said, the mattress may not be as warm as other mattresses, but it's also not the coolest.

Thus, if you are a very heavy sweater, we'd recommend opting for a pure pocket sprung mattress as these will offer the best breathability.

    A good choice for couples

The foams used in the Emma Hybrid are great for limiting motion transfer.

Motion transfer refers to how well movement and vibrations travel through the mattress.

If a mattress has low motion transfer, movement is absorbed sufficiently and won't travel through the mattress, meaning that you won't be disturbed by your partner's movements at night.

This makes the Emma Hybrid a good mattress for couples.

In addition, it's really easy to turn on the Emma mattress, so you'll feel comfortable sleeping.

The springs are also noiseless, meaning there's no squeakiness and creaking noises, and you won't be disturbed by your partner while sleeping.

If you're sharing your bed with a partner, though, we would highly recommend choosing a larger mattress size, like the Emma Hybrid king-size mattress (or even super king, if space allows) to ensure both partners have enough space to sleep comfortably.

    Emma mattress awards

Emma is an award-winning mattress brand and their flagship product, the Emma Original, has received dozens of accolades from dozens of UK establishments, including Which? Consumers' Association, Ideal Home, Real Homes, T3, The Independent, Good Housekeeping, The Mattress Guide, and Best Mattress UK.

The brand has also received several awards and recognitions in other European countries, including the Netherlands, Belgium, France, and Germany.

    Emma Hybrid Which? test results

The Emma Hybrid itself is an award-winning mattress in its own right, and has been granted the Best Buy approval by the Which? Consumers' Association.

It scored 75% in the Which? test results.

They've rated it as an incredibly durable mattress that's breathable, stable, easy to move around on, and supportive for most people.

But, they've found it to lack in support for back sleepers of larger body size.

    Emma mattress certifications

All of the foams used in the Emma Hybrid are OEKO-TEX-STANDARD-100-certified.

This is one of the world's best-known product-safety labels and assures that the product contains no harmful toxins or chemical substances.

Emma UK also complies with strict testing and safety requirements during the manufacturing process and ensures that all Emma mattresses comply with the BS 7177 regulation, making their mattress fully fire-retardant.

Emma mattresses are also 100% vegan.

    Emma mattress accessories

Emma UK also offers other mattress accessories to enhance your sleeping experience.

    These include:

    • The replacement mattress cover.
    • The high-quality Emma Original pillow, made up of three interchangeable foam layers and uniquely designed to fit all sleeping profiles.
    • The softer Emma Cloud pillow.
    • The 6.7 tog microfibre Emma Cloud duvet.
    • The waterproof Emma mattress protector.
    • The platform design Emma Bed.

We've linked to the mattress cover and the mattress protector above, but you'll find a snapshot of the other accessories and links to more information below.

Emma also offers a high-quality mattress topper, but this is not yet available in the UK.

    Emma delivery & trial period

The Emma Hybrid mattress is delivered free of charge within mainland UK within 5-7 business days, rolled up and vacuum-sealed in a compact box.

The box measures 45 x 45 x 110 cm, and has been specifically designed to fit through any narrow passageway and can be easily handled by one person.

Emma ships with UPS, DPD, and Rhenus in the UK.

If you're in Ireland, you'll need to order from the Emma Ireland website.

How long does it take for the Emma Hybrid mattress to expand?

Once unpacked, your new mattress will slowly inflate and return to its original size.

This happens as soon as you've removed the plastic wrapping but can take up to 4 hours.

What to do with your old mattress?

Of course, you can dispose of your old mattress yourself. We give you tips on how to do this in our article here.

But, conveniently, Emma also offers an old mattress removal service.

At a small additional cost, they will pick up your old mattress when they deliver your new one, so you don't have to deal with the hassle of it at all.

    Emma box

    Emma with delivery box

    Emma mattress unfolding

    Off-gassing is completely normal

You may notice a slight odour when you first unpack your mattress. This is entirely normal and a side effect of the manufacturing process.

The smell is not toxic or harmful in any way but can be a little unpleasant.

We recommend that you unpack your Emma Hybrid in a well-ventilated room and allow the smell to fully disappear before use.

This shouldn't take more than a few days.

Risk-free trial period with free returns

The Emma Hybrid mattress usually comes standard with a 100-night trial period.

In light of the coronavirus pandemic, however, this has been elongated to a 200-day risk-free trial period, which will begin once the mattress is delivered.

You will then have the chance to try out the mattress for 200 days in the comfort of your own home.

Generally, it will take the body a little while to get used to a new mattress. This may take only a few days but can take up to three weeks (or even longer).

That's why it's important to really give yourself the chance to fully experience the mattress and allow your body to become accustomed to it.

If, after this period, you’re not completely happy with the Emma Hybrid, you can simply return it free of charge by contacting Emma’s customer service via the returns portal.

The manufacturer will organise and pay for the return of the mattress and issue you with a full refund.

    Emma Hybrid Delivery

    Emma UK 10-year guarantee

Your Emma Hybrid mattress also comes with a 10-year guarantee that protects you in case of manufacturing faults or premature deterioration of foams or springs.

    This warranty covers:

    • Any dips or sags greater than 2.5 cm (0.9") despite correct use.
    • Cracks or hollows in the foam of the mattress within the first 6 months of use.
    • Mattress not inflating to the correct size despite a 2 cm (0.7") leeway across all dimensions.
    • Damaged zippers or faulty stitching.

In the event of any of these, Emma will exchange your mattress.

Should you buy the Emma Hybrid mattress?

As our Emma Hybrid mattress review has hopefully shown, this mattress is definitely a best-buy option.

It's comfortable and offers a good night's sleep with adequate support, pressure relief, and optimal spinal alignment.

The mattress is well-suited to lighter- and average-weight people.

It may be too soft for heavier-weight people - especially heavier-weight back sleepers - who require more support and would benefit from a firmer mattress.

We can recommend this mattress to:

    • People of light, average, or slightly heavier weights.
    • People who enjoy a firmer sleeping surface.
    • Side sleepers.
    • Couples.

If you're not sure, we recommend making full use of the trial period. After all, it's only by sleeping on a mattress for a few weeks that you'll know if it's really right for you.

    Frequently asked questions

    • Where are Emma mattresses made?

Emma may be a German company but all Emma UK mattresses are made in the UK.

    • What mattresses does Emma UK offer?

In addition to the high-quality Emma Hybrid mattress, Emma UK also offers two other mattresses, the Emma Original and the Emma Original Hybrid.

      Emma Original

The Emma Original mattress is the brand's flagship product.

It's both a best-selling and an award-winning mattress that has been recommended in the UK by associations such as Which, Ideal Home, Real Homes, T3, The Independent, Good Housekeeping, The Mattress Guide, and Best Mattress UK.

As a three-layered memory foam mattress, the Emma Original has been designed for body-shape-contouring comfort, pressure relief, and optimal support.

While it is rated as a medium-firm mattress, we think the Emma Original qualifies more as a soft mattress. We have given it a 4 out of 10 on our Sleep Hero firmness scale, where 1 is the softest and 10 the firmest.

Despite its softness, though, it's an excellent mattress that's exceptionally comfortable.

It offers optimal spinal alignment in every sleeping position, but it is particularly suitable for side sleepers.

The Emma Original is often recommended as an orthopaedic mattress to alleviate lower back pain due to its superior adaptability and relief of pressure points

This mattress features four layers: Breathable Airgocell foam, pressure-relieving memory foam, extra-tall zoned pocket springs, and a stabilising cold foam layer.

The Emma Original Hybrid is Emma's most advanced mattress for exceptional comfort and stability.

The zoned pocket springs allow for optimal hip and shoulder support, resulting in spinal alignment, and increased breathability.

The mattress also offers excellent motion isolation, making it a good choice for couples.

The Emma Hybrid mattress is only available in one standard degree of firmness and cannot be customised.

Simply select this option upon checkout.

    • How do I return an Emma product?

Returns of Emma mattresses and accessories are handled online via the returns portal.

All steps necessary are clearly described and simple to follow.

You do not need to keep the original packaging to return the mattress.

Returns within the trial period are free, and you will receive a full refund within 14 days.

    • How can I contact Emma’s customer service?

If you have any questions pre-purchase or after buying an Emma product, you can contact Emma’s customer service team.

We’ve found them to be very helpful.

Customer service is readily available via the live online chat or the contact forms on the Emma website.

    • Can Emma mattresses sag over time?

All mattresses sag eventually, which can seriously affect the quality of your sleep.

That's why we recommend you purchase a new mattress every 10 to 13 years.

Premature sagging only occurs in poor quality mattresses.

You should not experience any premature sagging with any of the Emma mattresses, which are all high-quality products.

All Emma mattresses also come with a 10-year guarantee.

Should your mattress sag before this time, you can contact Emma's customer support team.

    • What does Emma's 10-year guarantee cover?

All Emma mattresses come with a 10-year guarantee.

This covers cracks, dents, or other damages to the foam that have occurred despite proper use and proper handling of the Emma mattress.

Simply contact the customer service team and provide a photograph of the damage.

Emma will swap your mattress with a brand new one.

      Terms and conditions do apply.

    • Is the Emma Hybrid similar to the Nectar mattress?

While both the Emma Hybrid and the Nectar mattress are high-quality products with similar features and degrees of firmness, the two actually differ remarkably in terms of construction.

The Emma Hybrid combines memory foam with pocket springs.

The Nectar is a memory foam mattress and doesn't have any springs.

If you're looking for a different hybrid mattress, you could consider the British-made Simba Hybrid.

    • What is the Emma friend referral programme?

Emma UK offers a friend referral programme, where you can share your unique code to give your friends a discount on their first purchase - and earn money in the process!

      This is how it works:

      • After you have made a purchase, you can share your unique personal friend referral code.
      • Your friends will get £20 off their first purchase.
      • If your friend keeps the purchase beyond the trial period, you'll be rewarded with £20, automatically transferred to your bank account.

You will have to make a minimum purchase of £290 to receive a referral code, and your friend will have to make a minimum purchase of £290 to use the discount.

The discount can be used in conjunction with other promotions that offer up to 30% off.

You can refer up to 8 friends.

    • Does Emma UK offer refurbished or renewed mattresses?

Yes, Emma UK does offer refurbished and renewed mattresses.

If Emma mattresses are returned within the trial period, Emma checks them for damages and sterilises them, after which the inner and outer covers are replaced, essentially rendering the mattress "as new".

These refurbished mattresses are available at a fraction of the original price from select outlets such as eBay and Wowcher.

However, renewed mattresses do not come with a trial period and they do not come with a 10-year guarantee.

While buying a refurbished mattress is a good idea if you're on a very tight budget, we would not recommend it.

It's always better to buy directly from Emma and receive your trial period and guarantee.

    • Can I buy the Emma Hybrid on Amazon UK or through other stockists?

Yes, the Emma Hybrid mattress is available on Amazon in the UK and other approved sellers, including DFS, Carpetright, and John Lewis.

The 10-year guarantee is valid if you purchase from an approved seller, though delivery conditions are subject to change.

Note, though, that you will only receive a 14-day trial and a 6-month guarantee if you purchase refurbished mattresses through agents such as Wowcher, GoGroopie, or eBay.

We would recommend buying directly from the Emma website.

    • Covid-19 update

We are living in unpredictable times and businesses all over the UK are working hard to contain the spread of the Covid-19 coronavirus and to minimise its effects.

Despite the daily changes, Emma strives to continue to offer its customers the best service.

For a limited timeframe, Emma UK will be offering its customers:

      • 200-day trial period instead of the standard 100-night trial period.
      • 0% financing and coverage for the 200-day trial period.
      • Free shipping, as always.
      • No-contact delivery: Customers can request doorstep delivery, and the company has put a No Signature Policy in place.
