Emma Hybrid mattress composition

The Emma Hybrid is a high-quality hybrid mattress.

It combines the best qualities of memory foam and pocket sprung mattresses to create a breathable, supportive, and comfortable sleeping surface ☁️

The Emma Hybrid mattress features four different layers and a fully removable and washable top cover.

The four different layers are:

  • Patented Airgocell foam
  • Supportive mini pocket springs
  • Viscoelastic memory foam
  • Supportive HRX foam

Emma Hybrid mattress layers

1. A top layer of patented Airgocell foam (4 cm / 1.5 inches)

This open-pored and breathable foam layer provides comfort and limits motion transfer.

2. Supportive conical pocket springs (2 cm / 0.7 inches)

An average of 2000 individually wrapped pocket springs placed deep between two layers of foam provide support.

3. Viscoelastic memory foam (3 cm / 1.1 inches)

This pressure-relieving memory foam layer adapts perfectly to your shape for that body-hugging comfort 🤗

4. A base layer of supportive HRX foam (16 cm / 6.3 inches)

This cold foam base layer adds overall stability and support to the mattress.

It also features unique contour zones, enhancing the mattress's ability to keep your body perfectly aligned for that orthopaedic feel.

Emma Hybrid mattress layers
There are five layers to the Emma Hybrid

    Emma Hybrid mattress firmness

The Emma Hybrid is described as a medium-firm mattress, but we think it definitely falls on the softer end of the scale.

Does the Emma Hybrid mattress offer enough support?

As we've found in our Emma Hybrid review, this mattress is indeed very supportive, especially if you're of average weight.

With its unique combination of materials and the zoned base layer, the Emma Hybrid manages to offer great support while keeping your spine in a healthy alignment 📏

This is achieved by offering more support for the lighter parts of your body, like your feet and head, while allowing the heavier parts of your body, like your shoulders and pelvis, to sink in more deeply.

    The result?

    A perfectly aligned spine.

This makes it a brilliant choice for anyone suffering from upper or lower back pain.

    Not good for heavier-weight people

We've found that the Emma Hybrid mattress offers this perfect level of support if you sleep on your side or if you're shorter or lighter and sleep on your back.

If you're larger than average and a back sleeper, the mattress does not give you the support you'll need.

You may wish to try the Nectar mattress or the Otty Hybrid mattress, which may offer more support and work better for your body.

That said, we highly recommend making use of the risk-free trial period.

Emma UK gives you 200 nights to try the mattress 🗓

If you find that it's not supportive enough for you, you can send it back for a full refund.

    Emma Hybrid mattress
The Emma Hybrid is cool and comfortable

    Good edge support

The Emma Hybrid offers great edge support if you're sleeping on the mattress.

This means that you can make use of the entire width of the mattress, which is good news if you're sharing your bed with a partner.

That said, edge support is a little lacking if you're sitting on the edge of the mattress.

How comfortable is the Emma Hybrid?

The Emma Hybrid is a medium-firm mattress with excellent support but still offers maximum comfort.

This is because the two upper comfort layers of Airgocell and memory foam give the Emma Hybrid mattress a soft and pleasant feeling.

Memory foam in general is known for its high degree of comfort.

It adapts perfectly to the contours of your body, supporting you where needed, allowing your muscles to relax sufficiently, and relieving any pressure points.

    Easy to move around on

Memory foam can sometimes be a little difficult to move around on 🕺

This is because of that characteristic memory imprint, where the foam keeps the shape of your imprint for a little longer.

But, this is not the case with the Emma Hybrid.

It is quite easy to turn around on, which makes it suitable for more restless sleepers.

Overall, the mattress is incredibly comfortable.

    Emma Hybrid mattress with box
The Emma Hybrid works well for restless sleepers

    Good temperature regulation

The combination of materials in the Emma Hybrid allows for great breathability.

Memory foam mattresses generally offer a warmer sleep as memory foam keeps more heat 🥵

But the patented Airgocell foam layer and the pocket springs counteract this, allowing for greater air circulation and preventing heat from being trapped in the mattress.

The space between the pocket springs in the mattress's core is especially important in creating greater airflow.

This unique combination of foam and pocket springs, together with the 3D mesh of the mattress cover, ensures that the Emma Hybrid provides an overall cooler sleep.

This is great news for people who prefer a more temperature-neutral sleep.

What if you're a heavy sweater?

That said, the mattress may not be as warm as other mattresses, but it's also not the coolest ❄️

If you are a very heavy sweater, we'd recommend opting for a pure pocket sprung mattress instead.

Spring mattresses offer the best breathability.

You could also consider the more advanced Emma Premium, which features full-size pocket springs and offers much greater breathability than the Emma Hybrid.

    A good choice for couples

The foams used in the Emma Hybrid are great for limiting motion transfer.

Motion transfer refers to how well movement and vibrations travel through the mattress.

If a mattress has low motion transfer, movement is absorbed sufficiently and won't travel through the mattress.

This means that you won't be disturbed by your partner's movements at night.

Since the Emma Hybrid has low motion transfer, it is a good mattress for couples 👩‍❤️‍👨

In addition, it's really easy to turn around on the Emma mattress, so you'll feel comfortable sleeping.

The springs are also noiseless, meaning there's no squeakiness and creaking noises that could disturb you.,

If you're sharing your bed with a partner, though, we would highly recommend choosing a larger mattress size, like the Emma Hybrid king-size mattress (or even super king, if space allows).

Larger mattress sizes ensure that both partners have enough space to sleep comfortably.

    Emma Hybrid mattress cover

The Emma Hybrid mattress is encased in a stylish grey-and-white cover, made predominantly of polyester.

The mattress cover is completely removable and machine-washable at 60 degrees.

This is great for hygiene 🛀

It also makes the mattress a hypoallergenic choice suitable for people prone to allergies.

    Emma Hybrid mattress cover

    Emma Hybrid mattress top cover

    Temperature-regulating fibres

Both the top and bottom covers of the mattress are equipped with temperature-regulating fibres and 3D mesh to help wick away moisture.

This keeps the cover and the mattress as a whole more breathable 💨

Greater air circulation and breathability also ensure that your mattress will remain more temperature-neutral for a more comfortable sleep.

This is especially important in memory foam mattresses, as memory foam retains more heat.

The bottom cover also contains a non-slip base, which allows your mattress to sit firmly on your bed frame.

    Side handles for easy transportation

Conveniently, the Emma Hybrid mattress cover also has side handles.

This makes transporting the mattress much easier.

You don't need to flip your mattress, but turning it regularly is recommended.

The Emma Hybrid is also a relatively low-weight mattress, coming in at only 35 kg (77 lbs) for the largest super king-size.

    Emma mattress cover

    Emma mattress handles

    Replacement mattress covers

Did you know you can also purchase a replacement mattress cover from Emma UK?

This is great news if your original cover should ever get damaged 🥳

That said, we'd always recommend adding a waterproof mattress protector to further safeguard your mattress from any spills, damage, and stains.

    Emma Hybrid mattress sizes

Emma Hybrid mattresses are available in most of the standard UK mattress sizes.

    These include:

    • Emma Hybrid single mattresses: 90 x 190 cm (3’ x 6’3”)
    • Emma Hybrid small double mattresses: 120 x 190 cm (4' x 6'3")
    • Emma Hybrid double mattresses: 135 x 190 cm (4’6” x 6’3”)
    • Emma Hybrid king size mattresses: 150 x 200 cm (5’ x 6’6”)
    • Emma Hybrid super-king-size mattresses: 180 x 200 cm (6’ x 6’6”)

    Emma Hybrid mattress depth

All Emma Hybrid mattresses have a height of 25 cm (10 inches).

This is on par with most bed-in-a-box mattresses, meaning all your standard bedding should fit quite comfortably.

It's also a great height for box spring beds and divan bases 🛌

Deeper mattresses not only look better on a divan base, but they also make it easier to get in and out of bed.

This is especially important if you have orthopaedic concerns or are elderly.

    Emma Hybrid mattress depth
The Emma Hybrid has a height of 25 cm, but there may be small differences between individual mattresses

    Emma Hybrid mattress weight limit

The Emma Hybrid mattress has been designed to support a maximum weight of 130 kg (286 lbs) per person.

People heavier than this will not get enough support and are likely to sink into the mattress too deeply.

This can lead to lower back pain and orthopaedic problems in the long term.

We'd recommend that larger builds opt for pocket spring mattresses.

    Emma Hybrid mattress prices

The Emma Hybrid mattress is more expensive than the all-foam Emma Original mattress.

But, it's on par with other hybrid mattresses of similar quality, like the Eve Original Hybrid and the Simba Hybrid.

    Emma Hybrid Which? test results

The Emma Hybrid itself is an award-winning mattress in its own right and has been granted the Best Buy approval by the Which? Consumers' Association.

It scored 75% in the Which? test results.

They've rated it as an incredibly durable mattress that's breathable, stable, easy to move around on, and supportive for most people.

But, they've found it to lack support for back sleepers of larger body size.

    Emma mattress certifications

Emma UK complies with strict testing and safety requirements during the manufacturing process.

All Emma mattresses comply with the BS 7177 regulation, making them fully fire-retardant.

Emma mattresses are also 100% vegan.

    Emma mattress accessories

Emma UK also offers other mattress accessories to enhance your sleeping experience.

    These include:

    • The high-quality Emma Original pillow, which comprises three interchangeable foam layers.
    • The softer Emma Premium microfibre pillow.
    • The 6.7 tog microfibre Emma Cloud duvet.

We've also linked to the mattress cover and the mattress protector above.

Emma also offers a high-quality mattress topper, but this is not yet available in the UK. We can recommend the Eve mattress topper as an alternative.

You'll find a snapshot of the other accessories and links to more information below.

    Emma beds

There is currently one Emma bed frame available in the UK.

This is a great option for your Emma mattress and provides a flat surface to place your mattress on.

What do you do with your old mattress?

Of course, you can dispose of your old mattress yourself. We give you tips on how to do this in our article here.

But, conveniently, Emma also offers an old mattress removal service.

At a small additional cost, they will pick up your old mattress when they deliver your new one, so you don't have to deal with the hassle of it at all.

Because of the Covid-19 pandemic, however, you will need to bring the old mattress to the front door of your building.

    Unpacking the Emma Hybrid mattress

Emma Hybrid mattress rolled up on bed

How long does it take the Emma Hybrid mattress to expand?

Once unpacked, your new mattress will slowly inflate and return to its original size.

This happens as soon as you've removed the plastic wrapping but can take up to 4 - 6 hours.

    Off-gassing is completely normal

You may notice a slight odour when you first unpack your mattress. This is entirely normal and a side effect of the manufacturing process.

The smell is not toxic, but can be a little unpleasant.

We recommend you unpack your Emma Hybrid in a well-ventilated room and allow the smell to disappear fully before use.

This shouldn't take more than a few days at most.

    Emma Hybrid trial period

The Emma Hybrid mattress usually comes standard with a 100-night trial period.

However, this has been extended to a 200-day risk-free trial period because of the Covid-19 pandemic.

Your trial period begins with mattress delivery.

You will then have the chance to try out the mattress for 200 days in the comfort of your own home 🏡

It will take the body a little while to get used to a new mattress.

This may take only a few days but can take up to three weeks (or even longer).

That's why it's important to give yourself the chance to experience the mattress and allow your body to become used to it.

If, after this period, you’re not completely happy with the Emma Hybrid, you can simply return it.

Returns are free, and Emma will organise everything.

All you need to do is contact Emma’s customer service via the returns portal.

You'll receive a full refund within 14 working days 💵

Returned mattresses are refurbished and sold as Emma Hybrid renewed mattresses at a discounted rate.

    • Cracks or hollows in the mattress's foam within the first 6 months of use.
    • Mattress not inflating to the correct size despite a 2 cm (0.7 inches) leeway across all dimensions.
    • Damaged zippers or faulty stitching.

In the event of any of these, Emma will exchange your mattress.

Should you buy the Emma Hybrid mattress?

As our Emma Hybrid mattress review has hopefully shown, this mattress is definitely a best-buy option.

It's comfortable and offers a good night's sleep with adequate support, pressure relief, and optimal spinal alignment.

The mattress is well-suited to lighter- and average-weight people looking for a soft to medium-firm sleeping surface.

We can recommend this mattress to:

    • People of light or average weights.
    • People who enjoy a softer sleeping surface.
    • Side sleepers.
    • Couples.

If you're not sure, we recommend using the trial period.

After all, it's only by sleeping on a mattress for a few weeks that you'll know if it's really right for you.

    Frequently asked questions

    • Why choose a hybrid mattress?

Hybrid mattresses combine the features of a foam mattress with the features of a spring mattress.

      The materials work together optimally.

The foam layers allow the mattress to compress, aiding comfort, while the springs offer stability, support, and pressure relief.

Both materials used in the Emma Hybrid are of high quality, ensuring the durability and long lifespan of the mattress.

    • Where are Emma mattresses made?

All Emma mattresses sold in Britain are made in the UK.

    • Can I buy the Emma Hybrid on Amazon UK or through other stockists?

Yes, the Emma Hybrid mattress is available on Amazon in the UK and via other approved sellers, including DFS, Carpetright, and John Lewis.

The 10-year guarantee is valid if you purchase from an approved seller, though delivery conditions are subject to change.

Note, though, that you will only receive a 14-day trial and a 6-month guarantee if you purchase an Emma Hybrid refurbished mattress through agents such as Wowcher, GoGroopie, or eBay.

We would recommend buying directly from the Emma website.

    • Can Emma customise my Emma Hybrid mattress?

The Emma mattress may only be available at one level of firmness but the company is there to help you achieve maximum comfort.

Emma UK offers you one free layer to help soften or firm up the mattress if you find that it isn't quite working for you.

All you need to do is contact Emma's senior support team at support@emma-mattress.co.uk.

    • What's the difference between the Emma Original and Emma Hybrid?

The Emma Original is the Emma flagship product.

This is a soft memory foam mattress that's perfect for side sleepers and lighter-weight people.

The Emma Hybrid, in contrast, is a hybrid mattress that combines memory foam with mini pocket springs.

It's a lot firmer than the Emma Original and better suited to average-weight sleepers.
