Whilst not the best in terms of quality, IKEA is reliable and favoured by many for its great pricing 💷

Many people purchase from the IKEA range of mattresses because of this price point.

But is the quality of this mattress brought down by the cheap price? 🤔

We've tested the IKEA Hövåg mattress in depth to see if it is a great mattress to consider.

This is what we found out 👇

  • Good elasticity due to its integrated springs.

  • Firm enough to support even heavier-weight sleepers.

  • Very good breathability.

  • 90-day trial period.

  • Exceptionally low price.

  • Made of low-quality polyether foam.

  • The mattress cover is not removable and machine-washable.

  • Very firm and does not provide adequate pressure relief.

  • Delivery costs are extra.

  • The trial period is not risk-free as it only allows you to exchange a product.

A quick glance at the IKEA Hövåg

  • This is IKEA's version of a firm and medium firm mattress.

  • As with many IKEA products, it is very affordable.

  • It is best for those who sleep on their side because of its firmness.

  • Low-quality materials make it hard to recommend.

IKEA Hövåg comfort

The IKEA Hövåg is a pocket spring mattress with extra foam elements 🧽

This means that it comprises the best of both pocket sprung mattresses and a layer of foam surrounding the springs.

The mattress has a rather low spring density, but the outer foam layer provides a softer feel to the mattress overall.

It lacks the comforting hugging feeling of a memory foam mattress, but provides a firmer sleeping experience.

Unfortunately, the Hövåg uses a low-quality polyurethane foam (PUR foam).

Polyether is a very firm foam that is usually used as a base layer, providing stability and making the mattress more durable.

Sadly, this low quality foam does not put it at the same level of other hybrid mattresses such as the Simba Hybrid which is also available at more retailers.

High-quality mattresses combine this base foam with other types of foam, like memory foam, cold foam, or latex, to provide for a more comfortable sleeping sensation.

This is not the case with the IKEA Hövåg. Which combines two firm materials for a mattress that are not best suited to all sleeping positions.

Mattresses that are less firm will also appeal to more people, and are better if you need a double size or a king-size mattress, to accommodate your partner.

The Hovag also has a low foam density.

Whilst this may not seem important at first, a good foam density is key to the longevity of your mattress. As the Hovag's weight is only 28 kg/m³, the mattress may deteriorate faster than other higher-quality mattresses.

If you find your mattress is too firm, then look into a mattress topper to get the correct level of comfort for you.

IKEA Hövåg firmness

There are two types of IKEA Hovag: the firm and the medium firm.

We would rate the firm mattress at 8 out of 10 on our Sleep Hero firmness scale.

The mattress is indeed very firm, meaning the body lies flat on the surface without sinking.

It is the composition of the Hovag which lets it down from being a strong firm mattress.

It fails to be comfortable for all sleeping positions, and the density is severely lacking.

Front sleepers will also struggle, feeling a build-up of pressure around their hips and back. Back sleepers will experience the best benefit, although the mattress still feels rather uncomfortable.

Ikea Firm Hoevag

Positive attributes of the IKEA Hövåg

Some positive features of the IKEA Hövåg:

  • It has very good elasticity because of its integrated springs 🌀
  • It is firm enough to support even heavier-weight sleepers.
  • The mattress also has very good breathability 🌬️

Medium-firm IKEA Hövåg

There is another version of the IKEA Hövåg.

The medium-firm version of the IKEA Hövåg has similar features, although side sleeping is far more comfortable on this mattress.

IKEA hovag

One reason for this is because IKEA make the upper layer of the mattress from polyether foam, which is usually reserved for the firmer base layers.

Because of its firmness, the mattress does not provide adequate pressure relief and lying down on it can be uncomfortable causing pressure build-up in important areas, especially if you’re lying down on your side.

This makes this version of the mattress much more comfortable for all sleeping positions. But heavier people may prefer the regular Hövåg.

We rate it 5 out of 10 on the firmness scale.

IKEA Hoevag firmness

IKEA Hövåg sleeping positions

Your sleeping position massively influences what type of mattress you need.

Back sleepers might want a material that’s softer to take pressure away from their hips, where front sleepers want something in the middle.

When the material doesn’t match your sleeping positions needs, you may begin to experience problems and dissatisfaction with your new mattress 😡

Whilst a medium firm mattress offers the most pleasing experience to all sleeping positions, the wrong materials can make all the difference.

That is ultimately where the IKEA Hovag fails to be a great mattress.

With such a low foam density, this mattress relies heavily on its springs to provide the comfort and pressure relief.

Sleeping on your back with the Hovag becomes incredibly hard when considering these springs will do little to comfort you, and only retain the mattresses shape.

Side sleepers require support for their shoulders and backs, especially whilst asleep. As a result, the Hovag is not a good option for them either.

Similarly to back sleepers, sleeping on your side with the Hovag just feels uncomfortable, even with the medium firm mattress, there is little give and the sleeping surface feels hard 🧱

Front sleepers may like the IKEA Hövåg 🤩

Sleeping on your front requires a firm surface so that you do not sink into it and instead keep your body in line and in the correct shape.

Thanks to the low-density foam, and the polyether firmness, this mattress is best suited to those who need a firm set up.

Preferred sleeping positions

If you like sleeping on your side, then you should definitely look for a slightly softer mattress 🪶 that adapts better to the contours of your body. This is necessary for your spine to remain in healthy alignment.

We recommend the Emma Original mattress for side sleepers.

If you like sleeping on your stomach, then the IKEA Hövåg offers sufficient stability and support to keep your spine well-aligned.

That said, comfort-wise, the IKEA Hövåg simply doesn't compare to higher-quality mattresses such as the Eve Original or Eve Premium Hybrid, as these will support your sleeping position far better.

Best alternatives to IKEA Hövåg:

IKEA Hövåg mattress cover

The mattresses cover is dark grey and made only from cotton and polyester.

The manufacturer states that the cover is not machine washable, which raises hygiene concerns.

IKEA Hovag handle

Ikea Hovag cover

This also doesn’t make this mattress ideal for those suffering from allergies 🤒

IKEA recommends cleaning the mattress with furniture shampoo, a strange and inconvenient cleaning method.

We would recommend using a mattress protector with this mattress.

These are removable covers that can be machine washed and are far more hygienic.

IKEA Hövåg mattress sizes

The Hövåg pocket spring mattress comes in standard UK mattress sizes.

These include:

  • IKEA Hövåg standard single mattress: 90 x 190 cm (3’ x 6’3")
  • IKEA Hövåg standard double mattress: 135 x 190 cm (4’6" x 6’3")
  • IKEA Hövåg standard king-size mattress: 150 x 200 cm (5’ x 6’6")
  • IKEA Hövåg standard super-king mattress: 180 x 200 cm (6’ x 6’6")

This is good and means that most people can try out the IKEA Hövåg, knowing it is in their size and will fit their bed frame.

Ikea accessories

Chances are you know IKEA has a lot to offer.

Its incredibly low prices and strong quality make for appealing products to the customers.

Pair that with the clean Scandinavian design and IKEA's popularity makes complete sense.

Whilst the Hövåg didn't meet our expectations, there are plenty of bedding accessories to choose from at IKEA.

The Malm bed frame

The Malm bed range is immensely affordable, looks great, and the quality is good.

It's furniture is especially great, with affordable bed frames, bedside tables and bedsheets for all UK sized mattresses.

Should you buy a bed frame at IKEA, you'll also be able to choose which type of bed slats you want, as they have designed a stronger Lonsët for stronger support.

Lonset slatted bed frame

The Lonsët slatted bed frame offers optimal strength and support for your bed.

IKEA is a great place to buy furniture and accessories for every room in your home, and just because the Hovag isn't the best mattress option, there are some really great products to be found in their stores.

IKEA delivery & customer service

We bought the IKEA Hövåg directly from the store, but you can buy it online 🚚

IKEA's mattresses come rolled up in plastic with carrying handles. A pleasant way to carry the mattress, although not practical if using public transport.

Online delivery can take up to 7 working days 🕖 a time which IKEA could improve upon compared with other brands.

IKEA is also avialable on Amazon, whose delivery times are much quicker.

Delivery may cost as much as £40, but it's worth it, considering you’re avoiding the hassle of transporting the mattress yourself.

IKEA offer a 90-day exchange programme as standard. You cannot return the mattress, only exchange.

If you're not satisfied with your purchase, you can exchange your mattress for a different one.

This is not quite on a par with the trial periods of other mattresses sold online.

Other manufacturers offer you trial periods of 100 days and allow you to return your product for a full refund if you're not satisfied ♻️

All IKEA mattresses come with a 25-year guarantee, but the trial period is still too short as it takes at least 30 nights to settle into a new mattress.

Should you buy the IKEA Hövåg?

Overall, our experience with the IKEA Hövåg was average 🤷

This mattress simply cannot compete with other higher-quality and slightly more expensive pocket spring mattresses.

We slept comfortably on our backs and on our stomachs, but the mattress definitely felt too firm when sleeping on the side.

The mattress could benefit from higher-quality soft filling to accommodate all sleeping positions.

It could work well as a guest room mattress, as it is like a sofa bed in terms of mattress quality.

We would highly recommend that you consider one of the alternative mattresses we've suggested below.

Some of these may be more expensive 💰, but they offer incomparable quality and a much friendlier user experience.

Our top alternative recommendations would be the Eve Lighter Hybrid and the Simba Hybrid.

Frequently asked questions

  • Who are IKEA?

The Swedish furniture giant surely needs no introduction.

Established in 1943 by billionaire business magnate Ingvar Kamprad, the idea behind IKEA was to offer a selection of furniture and household products suitable for the mass market and affordable for everyone.

Inspired by Scandinavian minimalism, IKEA attached great importance to attractive design

In the beginning, Kamprad only sold single products. The first IKEA catalogue was published in 1952.

Today, this giant company has a total of 433 stores in 52 countries, employs around 155,00 people, and has an annual turnover of around £33 billion.

  • What is the IKEA mattress range?

As a leading furniture manufacturer, it is no surprise that IKEA also features numerous mattresses.

Anyone who has ever visited an IKEA store knows that it can be a real retail jungle and you have to wander around the entire store. Only a small area of the store is allocated to the mattresses.

Luckily, you can now also order IKEA mattresses online for at-home delivery (delivery costs not included).

IKEA now offers around thirty mattress models: foam mattresses, spring mattresses, children's mattresses, latex mattresses, and mattresses for babies.

The IKE mattresses have numerous attractive features, including their low prices, 25-year guarantee, 90-day trial period, and great financing options.

We've considered all the different IKEA mattresses in detail in our IKEA mattress comparison

  • Is the IKEA Hövåg a better mattress than the IKEA Hamarvik?

The Hamarvik is a soft mattress, and better suited to a wider range of sleepers.

In comparison, the Hövåg is far firmer and not as comfortable.

While we weren't fans of the Hövåg, IKEA offers a range of different mattresses to choose from.

While the Hövåg might not be the best mattress, IKEA is incredibly affordable and has some excellent products.

  • Can I wash the IKEA Hövåg cover?

Yes, you can, but not easily.

IKEA state you cannot machine wash the IKEA Hövåg, but you can wash it by hand or with a damp cloth.
